Hello and welcome to the RELAUNCHED CNN.com! Our new site is the culmination of over a year of listening, researching, analyzing, and building a site to meet your needs. If there were an “easy button” for news, this is what you’d expect.

Thank you to everyone who visited our Beta version during the past few weeks and provided feedback. We’ve listened and made adjustments to reflect changes you recommended.

Our talented team of journalists, developers, designers, UI experts, researchers, project managers, engineers, and (simply) world-class problem solvers have come together to bring you this improved service. What will you find? First, the same laser-like focus on the news, particularly what’s happening now, that has made us the #1 news site online. Second, a cleaner, simplified interface that should make consuming the news an easy and enjoyable experience.

As you explore the site, you will find tons of great new features, including one-page integrated story-telling, the largest Flash video player of its kind, local coverage, better weather, blog links, commenting, and (coming Monday) free live video for breaking news.

Whether you like to scan headlines, seek perspective, dig into a topic or simply check out the most popular stories of the day, we’ve tried to create an experience that works for you.

For those of you just joining this conversation, check out our blog posts below. Take us for a test drive and let us know what you think by either commenting directly in this blog or clicking on the feedback links you’ll find throughout the site!

I miss the EDUCATION header located as you scroll down the page. Seems as though it was the only one omitted in the version. Can you bring it back?

Andrew Greenman   June 30th, 2007 6:12 pm ET

The website looks good but I would suggest that you make the website 100% consisent. When I go to travel news or other pages, I get the old page design.

Thanks,

Andrew

Lori   June 30th, 2007 6:20 pm ET

I have CNN as my homepage and when I logged on to check the news and it popped up, I immediately didn’t like it. It took me a second to realize where I was. Too generic and cold. Looks like a local, plain website with not enough CNN brand recognizion right off the bat. Too much writing on one page and not enough separation of areas. I think I’ll change my home page to msnbc.

Mikew3st   June 30th, 2007 6:28 pm ET

I love the site!

Bob Coogan   June 30th, 2007 6:32 pm ET

Is there a way to view an html version of the site? My company blocks flash and I also block it at home (in order to avoid being distracted by annoying advertisements). Otherwise I can’t view the site at all.

Doug Frizzell   June 30th, 2007 6:42 pm ET

I don’t like the new web site. Go back to the old one. CNN is news and that is what it should concentrate on, not other features. In addition, if you are going to have video, always have an article to read. Many times I want to know what is going one but I don’t want to watch a video.

Thank you.

SBLAINE   June 30th, 2007 6:56 pm ET

…and BTW I agree with Doug—don’t force us to watch a video (mostly all the time with a ‘prelude’ of commercials) when we can just as easily read the story. It is nothing short of forced commercialism and I don’t (and won’t) subscribe. If I have only one choice (watch or not) I will always choose not.

Haydur   June 30th, 2007 6:57 pm ET

I like the re-design a lot. I have always liked how CNN.com has kept a pseudo-minimalistic interface, especially compared to some other “fair and balance” networks whose website gives one the feeling of being on LSD.

The tabs for different content types i.e. video, photos etc. are also a welcome innovation, they keep a visitor’s focus on the story and not managing multiple popups. Now only if your broadcast department would take some clues from your web designers.

My only regret is the use of Flash to power the photos section. It could have been done with equal grace using Ajax+DHTML.

Andy McHale   June 30th, 2007 6:58 pm ET

This new site is the bomb! Keep it up CNN!

Summer Seale   June 30th, 2007 7:03 pm ET

I’ve seen so many iterations of cnn.com over the years. =)

It’s cool and all, and it always has loaded quickly. I have to say that it looks very much like the BBC News breakdown of the front page, which is good. I like it. Good job. But stick to something for a little longer if you get it right. =)

Summer.

Rick Kamel   June 30th, 2007 7:04 pm ET

CNN, nice job with the site. I don’t even turn on the national news on TV anymore. I now get all, 100% of my news from the internet, CNN, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report.

Oh, just between us, I hate the fluff with Robin and Co. No journalistic value on that show anymore. I understand you have to cater to the masses.

Rick Kamel.

GM   June 30th, 2007 7:04 pm ET

I don’t like it at all. A number of features are just gone. I see no reason to stick that big weather section in the middle of the page. For all CNN’s weather capabilities their online weather offerings stink. Always have. I have no idea why they farmed it out to AccuWeather. For the new video player to work I have to completely shut off my ad blocker. That is something that may just make me go somewhere else for my news. I’ll ad my voice to those that want a text story to go along with the video.

Juli   June 30th, 2007 7:06 pm ET

still can’t see the videos – a photo comes on for a split second and then the screen goes all white. i get videos on all other websites and from emails — only having a problem with cnn.
i keep trying to get help with this but nobody answers.

Mike   June 30th, 2007 7:10 pm ET

I was able to view videos on the old web site. Not any more!
:(

Is there any way I can view new material in the old format ?

Katie Norcross   June 30th, 2007 7:12 pm ET

I liked the old one better. This one has the feel and look of being a bit undeveloped.

WG Haramon   June 30th, 2007 7:15 pm ET

Please go back to your old website. And put more readable news on — not videos all the time with commercials!

Ruben Fowler   June 30th, 2007 7:16 pm ET

I’m guessing it’s designed to be iPhone friendly.

SBLAINE   June 30th, 2007 7:25 pm ET

I don’t like it

Bobby Logan   June 30th, 2007 7:27 pm ET

The new site is too cold, too sterile.

I’m not suggesting going back to what you had, but I must honest and say that I want a warmer, more comforting feleing when I come to CNN — after all, the news itself is usually cold and sterile — why have the same look?

I honestly may not come back — and I’d HATE to go to FOXNEWS!

Bob

Ken   June 30th, 2007 7:30 pm ET

I love it as a frequent user. The videos work immediately for a change too!

WHM   June 30th, 2007 7:39 pm ET

After a year of development you would hope at least there would not be 134 validation errors on the home page.

Jenna M   June 30th, 2007 7:41 pm ET

Where is the education section?!

LRA   June 30th, 2007 7:41 pm ET

What was wrong with the old website? As it was, I saw too much video, when I would have much preferred to read the news. I’m not saying get rid of the video, but please, at least give us the option! Before, I could see the majority of my news topics in one glance – now I am forced to scroll or try to customize the page. While I know change is good, in this case…it’s not!

Dave Ruckser   June 30th, 2007 7:42 pm ET

Sorry – I don’t like the “new look”. The old design was easy to follow – and the stories were listed in a clear, news-like fashion. I am speaking from 35 years of newspaper experience – that’s probably why I don’t like the format!

DR

RB   June 30th, 2007 7:42 pm ET

Your new site looks tight yo….
Aight….
Peace Out…

Stujoe   June 30th, 2007 7:42 pm ET

Really don’t like it. Looks less like a news site and more like a magazine site somehow. Makes the info seem stale.

Fortunately for cnn, MSNBC is terrible looking and FoxNews is too skimpy.

Aubrey   June 30th, 2007 7:44 pm ET

I liked the old site better. It fit the news more. This seems a bit unprofessional and the colors are terrible. I like more polish and less flash–and the headers were always nice and helped you get where you wanted to go easily.

amk   June 30th, 2007 7:48 pm ET

It is so bad that I removed cnn from my favourites. Just too much unwanted stuff in the home page.

David   June 30th, 2007 7:51 pm ET

It is a much needed update, but it doesn’t have that feel of the CNN International look. Getting there, but not quite!

Karen   June 30th, 2007 7:55 pm ET

Right now the front news story is about a flaming terrorist car crashing into the airport terminal at Glascow Airport, and the terrorist is caught on fire and throwing punches at people in the terminal. But this news story stop there for me because CNN.com has decided to launch some new, stupid design (when there was nothing wrong with the old one) and is forcing you to watch video of it, but the video only works if you’re one of the lucky people who have money to spend on constantly updating your computer software.

steve   June 30th, 2007 7:57 pm ET

What a let-down. It’s unfortunate to think that people actually are getting paid to destroy a good thing. A shake-up in whatever people are responsible is in order.

AJP   June 30th, 2007 7:59 pm ET

Another ‘NO’ vote for the new site. I *MUCH* prefer the previous incarnation.

AC   June 30th, 2007 8:01 pm ET

Would like to see the More News section directly under the Latest News, so I can see the headlines of each sub-section w/o having to scroll all the way to the bottom. Ditto comments on not forcing us to watch video to get the news story.

Ron   June 30th, 2007 8:02 pm ET

I am using Mozilla to view the cnn.com web site. Now it seems that many of the linked-to pages won’t let me use the Mozilla Back button to get to the main cnn page. I am not impressed.

Greg   June 30th, 2007 8:03 pm ET

I don’t like it at all. Nothing stands out or seems worth paying attention to. It’s a news site, why are all the news categories way, way below the fold? CNN.com has been my homepage at work, home, and on my laptop for 3 years – Not anymore.

George   June 30th, 2007 8:03 pm ET

The new web site design is juts awful.Navigation is difficult, the colours are dull.
It’s a big disaster.I wonder who allowed the geeks to take over the web site.
I don’t think I will ever visit CNN online.

Get back the old design, please! And fire the so-called talented web designers and journalists.
What a joke!
Toronto,Canada

Fast Eddie   June 30th, 2007 8:08 pm ET

Bring back the old version. It wasn’t broken, so there was no need to fix it. Now we’ve got a new website that isn’t the same and isn’t as easy to navigate.

Matt   June 30th, 2007 8:09 pm ET

Dislike it quite a bit, should have an option to allow the old one if preferred.

Ida   June 30th, 2007 8:09 pm ET

Sorry, folks – but I’m not fond of this. I liked the old presentation better, because there were more offerings on the first page. Also – as someone else said – if you do a video on something, for heaven’s sake – - please do a written or photo article as well! I *will* not wait for a video to load!

Offer more headers, please – at the very least. I appreciate your hard work, but I’m not so sure it was necessary.

Valerie   June 30th, 2007 8:11 pm ET

Everything is too BIG and too WHITE. I find it hard to read the home page and I jerk my head back to read it all. I am NOT old and do NOT need glasses, either! All the content seems to run together. Frames would be good!

toons   June 30th, 2007 8:15 pm ET

The site looks good! I agree with the above comments regarding video TEXT options. Please link an article that relates to the video, if any.

Thanks and keep up the good work CNN. I visit you several times throughout the day.

;=)

Tony   June 30th, 2007 8:18 pm ET

This is not an improvement. Foxnews.com did a re-design a while back and i started using your site. Now I will have to find some other site to get my news from that is easy to get the headlines quickly

Gary   June 30th, 2007 8:21 pm ET

I was rather surprised – and generally pleased – with the new layout.
It’s easier to read and to find the front page materials and is much less cluttered than before.

bob   June 30th, 2007 8:21 pm ET

Congrats, the redesign looks fantastic! Still has your brand, much easier to read, clean, and very contemporary. Love it.

marylee   June 30th, 2007 8:22 pm ET

Don’t like access to TV details buried – liked the top banner on old site to easily click for details on shows like Larry King Live…

James   June 30th, 2007 8:25 pm ET

Well frankley I thought it was my brouser that changed the formating of the site but wow what a difference. Its interesting and will have to get used to it. The red formating at the top of the site makes a bold stance on the appearence of the site. Its time for a change and it generally looks great. Keep up the good work.

James

Mark   June 30th, 2007 8:25 pm ET

I do not like the new site at all. It has a lot of wasted space in it, thanks to the videos in the upper right corner, under which is nothing but space.

Moreover, the new version seems to have fewer headlines than the older version, and the older version already had too few. If you don’t have a headline on the front page, people are unlikely to ever see the actual article. You need to have more than two headlines per category. I’m serious as a heart attack about this.

Also, you don’t take power users into account. Power users want to get the news as fast as possible. Do you know how many times I watch videos on your site? Hardly ever. The reason is because it is much faster for me to read the news than wait and listen while someone tells it to me. This is why I hate news stories on your site that are video only with no text option. In such cases I will sometimes even google a phrase to get a story on the subject rather than have to load the video. It’s faster.

Text, guys, text.

Your front page should be as space efficient as possible, providing the maximum number of links to the maximum number of stories with the minimum amount of scrolling down and the minimum amount of having to go to subpages to find more headlines.

If CNN doesn’t provide a good news portal for me, as a power news user, well, there are plenty of sites that do. Until now, CNN has been my first destination for on-line news. But it needn’t remain that way.

sammy   June 30th, 2007 8:26 pm ET

I Love it!

Chris   June 30th, 2007 8:28 pm ET

I really dont like the new site. The old one was much better, and I liked how it looked much more. The new one is annoying me, so much so that I think I will be switching to foxnews.com or msnbc.com as my new internet news source.

Scott King   June 30th, 2007 8:28 pm ET

Where are the Education and Science sections? I can’t find them anywhere with this new design.

Norene   June 30th, 2007 8:38 pm ET

I miss having the regular updated time-stamp indicator at the top of the page, showing how recently the page has been updated. Also, there seems to be quite a bit of wasted space along the left edge. Re the weather and local news area – please make some arrangements for connecting to a Vancouver BC service for the news portion – currently it is a big wasted blank area on the screen. Finally, you would never say ‘Los Angeles, USA’, and you should not say Vancouver, Canada either, given the size of the country! Let’s get some consistency here and put the provincial abbreviations in. Thanks – a longtime(Canadian) fan.

Eric   June 30th, 2007 8:40 pm ET

It looks like Time.com. I hate it.

Tom   June 30th, 2007 8:45 pm ET

Not a bad looking site, but I don’t like how most of the information is way down the page. Also, it seems ads that are unnecessarily large have replaced good content. Disappointed so far, but I will cope.

Spewak   June 30th, 2007 8:46 pm ET

Mozilla is showing jibberish right under the video section. What gives?

S.A. Yates   June 30th, 2007 8:51 pm ET

CNN has been my primary news source for several years now, and the new home page has many improvements — thanks for listening to user feedback. Two changes I would like to see: Please, please, PLEASE provide a link for a text article every time you post a headline linked to a video. Some of us just aren’t into video. And one feature of the old portal I miss very much is the “last updated at” time stamp…it was enormously helpful since my system sometimes updates and sometimes get stuck on a cached home page.

Jacqui Steele-Gratzer   June 30th, 2007 8:53 pm ET

The number of pop ups are excessive. Also, my compnay blocks video streem. Not to mention I don’t need everyone on the floor to hear it either … Why not have attached to your video pieces an article I can read. Granted sometimes you do have an article but it usual appears the next day!

Ernie J   June 30th, 2007 9:07 pm ET

Why is everything so big, and why all the white space? I also join those who would like to see a readable article alongside every video. I hate having a talking head tell me in two minutes– after a commercial, of course– what I can read in 10 seconds.

BRET BALLARD   June 30th, 2007 9:08 pm ET

SORRY, BUT I REALLY DONT LIKE THE CHANGES. SO MUCH SO, THAT I MAY NEED TO FIND ANEW SOURCE FOR NEWS.

Eric Langhorst   June 30th, 2007 9:09 pm ET

As a teacher I was surprised to find that “Education” is no longer a tab on the top of the page. I would hope that CNN, which produces great educational programming such as CNN Student News, would value education enough to continue to give it a tab link on the top of the page. Please bring it back – the world needs to value education enough to engage in active conversation about it.

jerry polon   June 30th, 2007 9:11 pm ET

The CNN site was already bad, and now it’s worse. It’s disgraceful that you continue to put every word out of that revolting Paris Hilton (only one example) on as “news,” and every day give more fluffed up non-stories an importance they don’t deserve. You have no respect for journalism. It’s mostly silly and gossipy. These have their place of course, and can be enjoyed. But they don’t belong right in the mix with Iraq, immigration, ‘08 politics, global warming, etc. Re-arranging the links is irrelevant, and adds nothing to the experience. I plan to switch to NYTimes or ABC, etc.

Cory   June 30th, 2007 9:13 pm ET

All in all, I really don’t like it. The new header is amazingly large – I would rather not have the gigantic Google search bar, have the tabs up there instead, and not have the Hot topics. Looking at CNN.com full-screen, between the browser header and the CNN header just under half of my screen is taken up by meaningless fluff.

I also don’t like the center justification. Typical UI design – especially for the web – shows that people look in the upper left hand corner. On the old site, I could easily look there and scan down just a bit to find out the main story. Now I have to find it on the page.

I also would love it if the main headline story was separated more from the other stories. I see it has a very light gray box around it, but maybe make the border more apparent, or something else so that it all doesn’t blend together.

As for the video-only stories – it’s one thing for the special or human interest stories (like the “Man has beef with too loud steer”), but when it is a real news story – especially a popular one – at least have the text version too. I very rarely click on the video version – I usually just do a Google search with the headline to find the local version of the story.

It’s always interesting to see what happens when site owners feel the need to change, and I hope that there were a lot of good changes on the backend that this is just one stage of. Even though I really don’t care for it, I’m sure it will grow on me (like I have much choice ;) )

David   June 30th, 2007 9:14 pm ET

mm. Looks like it sure has been dumbed down.

I cant say that I’m impressed with the redesign.

Patrick Baio   June 30th, 2007 9:16 pm ET

I read CNN.com everyday, along with other news websites, but I liked Cnn’s page before the change. I don’t have much interest in watching videos, rather read the story. You should see how CBSNews.com handles the video/readable story, not to mention the cursor hovering above the title gives you a brief on the story itself.

I guess you folks think if you don’t look sleek, you fall behind with currents trends. Maybe you should have the people who decided to make the change go work for for Microsoft and on Vista.

Many people don’t use Internet Explorer, but Firefox or Opera, so we have accuweather on the task bar. Your weather section sure takes up a lot of real estate.

I’ll still continue to read CNN.com but I do think much less of it, but what the heck, your execs got rid of Aaron Brown for Cooper Anderson.

Any chance of getting rid of Wolf Blitzer?

Thank you.

TheDetroitChannel   June 30th, 2007 9:17 pm ET

i had a feeling you’d launch a day or two early.

btw- i love video…just keep the spots short and we got a deal.

afterall, in media 2.0 i am the boss, right?

Holly Bergeim   June 30th, 2007 9:25 pm ET

I want to thank you very much for making your news videos free again. As a disabled-retired person living in Mexico on a barely-adequate fixed SS income, I had to choose between cable TV and the Internet. The latter was the best choice because it did more things. But it leaves me wanting for in-depth news videos. Pipeline curtailed that yet more.

My only source of news has just gotten a considerably better.

Holly B., in Chapala, Mexico

davidN   June 30th, 2007 9:26 pm ET

Hey guys, I think you forgot about something. The ability to have full screen video is now missing. I also liked how compact the previous site was. This place sends me scrolling all over the place. But really, please make it so we can have the option of full screen video. That was what was so great about Pipeline. May it RIP or be revived as an option.

Gary D.   June 30th, 2007 9:27 pm ET

I agree with some of the other folks here. I don’t like it either. Where is education?? It appears that CNN is continuing to “dumb-down” the news. I am very disappointed. I guess I will be using other sources from now on.

Karen   June 30th, 2007 9:27 pm ET

I don’t like it at all… to distracting….Go back to the old site!

Brian   June 30th, 2007 9:30 pm ET

Somehow I missed the memo and didn’t even know you were relaunching, so when I logged on today, it was quite a shock. Seeing all that white space, I thought my computer had frozen. An upgrade was needed, but not this. It looks sterile and cold. And, as others have said, please stick to the news. Be brave and go ALL NEWS! Believe it or not, there are people out here who don’t want to know the latest fashion trend or celebrity tidbit. For that, we look elsewhere. We are hungry for hard, cold news. You don’t even have to spin it. Just hang it out to dry. Also, please refresh developing stories more often. Thanks.

dextro2000   June 30th, 2007 9:31 pm ET

Good job guys, the only thing’s missing is CNN pipeline (free version). I’d love to see raw live video comming in from car chases, fires, floods, politics, …

Erin   June 30th, 2007 9:32 pm ET

I agree with everyone who wants a text article for every video story – if I wanted to depend on video alone I wouldn’t use the website, I’d just watch the television station. Also, it is MUCH more difficult to find something I want to read on the new site – the majority of the stories are down at the bottom of the page! Re-evaluate, please.

Bob Lord   June 30th, 2007 9:34 pm ET

I love the new site. But I do miss the posting of the last time the site was updated. Now it only has the last day it is updated..

Bring back the update time, I like knowing whether this is latest news.

Stephanie Lewis   June 30th, 2007 9:35 pm ET

Please provide at least three options for larger font sizes and I also agree with Doug that providing video is great but the story is the key. I already have a TV, I go online to read the story.
CNN is my home page and I check it constantly, keep up the good work, but get those font options available.
Thanks

Laura R   June 30th, 2007 9:43 pm ET

I love the new clean lines and uncluttered format – I gave this feedback somewhere else on the site but it did not appear here. I hated the old, cluttered look with the annoying, flashing ads (babies in your face, people being roped like cattle, etc. when you were trying to read news) and was always searching for a replacement that was as timely as your site. This is a big improvement!

I agree with the folks above who requested that you ALWAYS include a printed story, I too would much rather read than watch something (why I got rid of cable and read news online and in the paper!). Often I Google a story you only have in video so I can read it somewhere else rather than be forced to watch video I have no interest in watching.

I also requested in my earlier feedback that you limit your “news” stories to non-tabloid type articles. When I began watching Headline News with Lynn Russell years ago, it was excellent because I could get “headlines” in 8 minutes any 30 minutes day or night. (Then it got to be only about 4 minutes of real news, and now it has descended to the level of ET!) If you had tried to make Lynn interview Paris or report on Pamela’s or Anna Nicole’s lives, I bet she’d have quit in a heartbeat! If you must, put these stories under “entertainment” where they belong, not headlines. Nothing these people do is “headline” news, ever.

Thanks again for the upgrades.

Laura

Dhiren   June 30th, 2007 9:46 pm ET

Nice job copying the BBC! Imitation is the highest form of compliment

Karen   June 30th, 2007 9:48 pm ET

The primary reason I have used CNN.com is for one feature: I read a story, the name of the story significantly lightens. This saves me a lot of time in scanning headlines in the various sections to determine which stories I have already read, and which are new and yet to be read. Other sites do not offer this feature. While you are still lightening the headline of a read story, it is such a scant difference that it is worthless. Please fix this.

Emily   June 30th, 2007 9:50 pm ET

Honestly, I don’t like this new format nearly as well as I liked the other one. The old format was eye-catching and made me want to come back to see updates every 10 minutes. This format is dull and turns me away – Sorry!

Brian Hankins   June 30th, 2007 9:50 pm ET

Well, it’s different for sure. I will probably warm up to it more, very web 2.0 looking. I really think you should get rid of the gray area on both sides or put two more sidebars in those spaces. It looks like someone’s blog on wordpress or something. But congratulations none the less, I always like to see new things after reading this site for many, many years.

Noah Tsai   June 30th, 2007 9:51 pm ET

I agree with both those who want stories to go along with videos (which I won’t watch, ever), and who want “More News” after the main news section, and not tucked so far below. Is this CNN or a glossy faux-news entertainment weekly? I want more hard-hitting stuff, less fluff. And, while the new look is decidedly slick, all the other hit it on the head as well: too sterile, too cold. I prefer the older look, though this will grow on me I’m sure – but some things most certainly need tweaking.

Chris Aseltine   June 30th, 2007 9:56 pm ET

I get bombarded with Javascript errors on almost every page. I am using IE6 on Windows 2000.

For each Javascript error I get prompted to debug because I have Visual Studio installed…

Carol   June 30th, 2007 9:57 pm ET

My immediate reaction was very positive. I love the re-design — it’s clean and uncluttered, and easy to find what you’re looking for. Change can be jarring, and I would think that a lot of people whose first reaction is negative will end up liking it once they’ve gotten used to it.

I will add my voice to those who would like the choice of text when you have a video story.

DEb   June 30th, 2007 9:59 pm ET

I do not like the new format. There are little red “x”s everywhere and right clicking on the mouse will not open them. Yesterday, the cnn.com website was colorful, large font, easy to read. Today, the website looks like msnbc.com. White and colorless. small font. No clear distinctions between the rows.
Prior cnn.com web site rating: 10
Current cnn.com web site rating: 3

Not crazy about the new site. I miss the schedule and the a quick click to the programs. I can’t even find a link to the programs. Everything blends in together. I also agree that not everything should be on video. Please have articles w/the stories.

Amy   June 30th, 2007 10:02 pm ET

Not impressed with the new layout. You’ve pushed minimally relevant content like the polls and weather to be higher on the page and larger, and reduced the number of headlines shown. I have to scroll down more to see them, and that’s the only thing I’m here for. The new dull layout makes the ads stand out more, which is irritating in and of itself.

Also, I agree with all the comments about making text stories available whenever videos are available. I have no interest in watching the videos, and will only do so if forced. I can’t watch them at work, for example.

Paul   June 30th, 2007 10:05 pm ET

I agree with WHM–this new site still fails to conform with HTML standards. See http://validator.w3.org. Sites that conform work better across different platforms and are less likely to be affected by browser upgrades. Don’t rely on browsers to hide your coding errors.

Barry Fernelius   June 30th, 2007 10:05 pm ET

The design is a bit bland, but it is functional.

My wish list (in order of importance)

1. The new video aspect ratio is HD, but the content is regular NTSC video. DON”T EVER SQUASH NTSC VIDEO TO MAKE IT FIT INTO HD ASPECT RATIO. Always present video in its proper aspect ratio.

2. Fix the video feed so that I don’t have to turn off my add blocker in order to see it.

3. Always provide a text story in addition to the video story. Believe or not, I can obtain more details per unit time in a well written story than I can in a video.

4. Provide more international news. Your coverage is very U.S.-centric.

5. Provide more in-depth stories and more diverse points of view.

Fink   June 30th, 2007 10:06 pm ET

Pretty awful, the other site was much better, I’m not sure why it needed to change. Too much white space, its much harder to find information now.

Pleeeeease change it back.

Greg M   June 30th, 2007 10:09 pm ET

The redesign is pretty nice, simple and clean. The best part is I see the search is now powered by Google. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I tried searching for a news story I had heard about on the CNN television broadcast on CNN.com when search was powered by Yahoo and didn’t get a hit anywhere near relevant to what I wanted. I went to Google and got page after page containing news stories of what I was looking for! That alone makes me love the new CNN.com!

Barb   June 30th, 2007 10:10 pm ET

I don’t like your updated website at all. When you go into a story, you have to first scroll to the right to see the story highlights, and then you have to scroll back to the left to read the story. It’s an annoyance and a waste of time. Overall, the main page is just ugly. I have trouble viewing the videos and often all I get is a message that says “buffering”. I also found it very interesting that when I filled out the original feedback screen that you had available from the CNN home page there was no “submit” button available to click on (which is what the instructions on that screen directed the user to do). The “quality” of this new website gives me pause to ponder the quality of the news you’re reporting.

Gary Lea   June 30th, 2007 10:15 pm ET

I use CNN as my home page and have more than enjoyed it. The new looks good; however, there is one thing that I miss because I use it to check if my computer is working correctly–beleive it or not. That is the “update” notice. Previously you had an update TIME and date. Now just the date. Please reinstate the time of update.

Thanks

Laurie   June 30th, 2007 10:16 pm ET

Hate it, hate it, hate it.

We want more story headlines on the first page. I liked the way the old CNN was divided into separate categories with the top stories listed under each category, such as World, Asia, etc. Now I have to go through several hits to find the top news. You are known for cutting edge news, give it to us on the first page.

Annette Easton   June 30th, 2007 10:16 pm ET

I’ve tried to like the new site, but I just can’t. It’s absolutely horrid. It looks like it’s only half finished!

I also agree with the large number of people who have asked to please have text links to stories that have video. I never watch the videos and get thoroughly annoyed when I click on a link and discover that I’ve mistakenly selected a video instead of text.

I can’t believe you spent a year developing this – with that kind of waste you’d think it was government!

Ronald   June 30th, 2007 10:19 pm ET

Attractive, workable, uncluttered and easy to navigate. Inviting color scheme. Nice section breakdowns on the page. Headings at the top include timely concerns for society, but “Education” is missing. Good link-ups at the bottom.

Robb Czimny   June 30th, 2007 10:20 pm ET

Mr. Payne – great new web design, graphics, and handling of text. Clear and easy to follow, and not over-powering.

Only one suggestion – place a small keyline around the photos to give them more emphasis over the grey/white background. This will give images with white or light areas more visual definition.

Thanks for great reporting and outstanding handling of everything considered news around the world.

Best Regards,

RC

After a year of research, you are still way off the gold standard: The Drudge Report.

Pamela Dempsey   June 30th, 2007 10:21 pm ET

Ugh. “News lite”. The new site looks like something I’d be capable of putting together, and that’s not saying much. Seems very lightweight, too insubstantial. I agree with a previous reviewer — the site has a magazine feel, rather than a news feel. (Dare I say, “where’s the beef?”) Then again… that seems to be CNN’s trend over these past few years… less investigative hard-hitting journalism and more magazine style coverage, repeated endlessly throughout the day and week. I used to rely on CNN for my news, but with their extensive and annoying videos (rather than text coverage) and this new cheesy site, I’m boogying over to MSNBC.

RBA   June 30th, 2007 10:23 pm ET

I was wondering what happened to the Autos and Education section, I seem to be unable to find it, if it was omitted, I’d like it to be returned!

Gary   June 30th, 2007 10:33 pm ET

Blah, look like a bland local news website. Bad update.

Rhonda Wolfson   June 30th, 2007 10:35 pm ET

I’m very disappointed in the redesign. I think one of the most vital things is missing–the time(!), which was always next to the date. Without the time showing, we have no way of knowing how current the content is. Of course, that may be the point. This way we won’t know how often the site is updated.

Ditto on the videos. I much prefer to read an article than be subjected to videos with commercials.

I know change is healthy and all, but I much prefer the previous site.

garbanzobean   June 30th, 2007 10:38 pm ET

hate the new look.
old is gold.

Bab Sweeney   June 30th, 2007 10:43 pm ET

Love the new site! It’s clean. Contemporary. Airy. The other site had the feeling of a repressed belch.

Joey Wohlhieter   June 30th, 2007 10:44 pm ET

Pages, for the most part, will not load in Safari 3.0 Beta for Mac. Nine out of ten stories come up as a blank page, whether I try to “read” or watch “video.”

Barbara   June 30th, 2007 10:48 pm ET

I liked the old site better. This one is harder to read and poorly organized. It’s too hard to find information about tv shows. I don’t want to watch a 90 second video which is preceded by 30 seconds of commercials. I prefer reading my news when I am online. If I want to watch something, I’ll turn on the tv.

The only plus I can think of offhand is that the new site does load faster than the old. Wish you’d lose the pop-up ad though which I block anyway!

Elisa Hung   June 30th, 2007 10:51 pm ET

I have mixed feeling about the relaunch/redesign. I miss the extended article displays under each category (used to display up to 5) now 2-3 article listings. Now it will take more clicks.

COS   June 30th, 2007 10:55 pm ET

What is improved? Why is there a big chunk of wasted space in the middle of the page that you have to scroll past to get the rest of the news. You should never have to watch a video when something can be read much faster. Why do we have to move all over the page to see what was previously available at a glance? Why give the weather such a huge space on the page? We aren’t using CNN for our local weather. The National Weather Service and our local people do a great job of that for us. I also think you need to have much stronger contrast between the font and the background. Make it stand out. It is too soft and fuzzy. I hope this works better for you in some way because it really hasn’t improved anything on the user end from I see.

Carleenp   June 30th, 2007 10:58 pm ET

Why the switch in columns for the news sections? It changes nothing about the look, yet changes everything for trying to find things for those who regularly read there! It is generally a minor annoyance that seems to have no reason. Otherwise it all looks good.

Marvin   June 30th, 2007 11:03 pm ET

There is too much unnecessary space everywhere.
The international edition doesn’t have the “more news” feature where bullets from different sections are shown.
Everything is too big.
Design-wise, I like the new one, but you should make it more compact.
Thank you for your making improvements, but I hope you also listen to the comments and suggestions of your viewers.

mitchellscohen   June 30th, 2007 11:03 pm ET

Someone mentioned the iPhone. It does indeed look fine on the iPhone, but the old version of the site did too (viewed last night, before the CNN.com relaunch). Videos don’t work as the iPhone doesn’t have Flash (not yet at least). But I’m a text guy (and thus put in another plug for the “text story for every video” request).

The african nerd   June 30th, 2007 11:13 pm ET

i like it a lot. no more pop up videos!!!

Rosemary   June 30th, 2007 11:18 pm ET

You asked for our opinions before the launch, and the most common request was to have text for all stories with the video part being optional. This was repeated over, and over, and over again.

Why did you bother asking if you weren’t going to listen?

See you later CNN.

Eugenia   June 30th, 2007 11:22 pm ET

Video DOES NOT work here. The previous videos used to work (and yes, I have the latest Flash installed). I tried on Firefox, IE 7 and Safari under Windows. The ONLY browser where the new videos did work was on Opera 9.

Please fix your video code, it asks for useless activex controls, and it doesn’t work for most people. It just doesn’t load (black screen). I don’t have any ad-blockers, but I do have “noscript”, which is the No1, most popular, Firefox addon but I *have* given all privileges needed to all of your sub/sites for the video pages. And yet, it still doesn’t work. Which makes me believe that it’s not my Firefox extension that’s the problem, but your code. Besides, IE 7 doesn’t see video either.

Ori Eisen   June 30th, 2007 11:25 pm ET

Sorry, this is not coming close to the old one, which is my home page…

Nate   June 30th, 2007 11:25 pm ET

I love the clean look of the Web site. It’s not nearly as cluttered as the previous incarnation. I also find that it’s easier to navigate. I don’t think the people complaining understand all the work that goes into doing something like this… Good work.

Alan Hamilton   June 30th, 2007 11:27 pm ET

I miss the list of categories in the old video player. It looks like now I can’t just go to Jeannie Moos’ stores; I have to search for them first.

Vancouver Island Daryl   June 30th, 2007 11:29 pm ET

Very clean, simplistic, and professional looking BLOG. I’ll definitely be tunning into your RSS feeds!

FRvonGrofe   June 30th, 2007 11:33 pm ET

Very confusing. Not simple nor straightforward. I’m having to scroll right, then left, then back again. The old format was much much better and well organized. Easier to sort out.
Remember the old saw:….if it works don’t fix it!’

Patricia   June 30th, 2007 11:36 pm ET

I do not like the new site. If I wanted to go to a crayola site, I would do that. This new home page is not as easy to read as the old one. The new page just flat out stinks. I want news, not fluff. Guess there is always msnbc. I am changing my home page as soon as I click submit. I miss Pipeline, too. I didn’t mind paying for the site because then I did not have to watch videos, and I was able to look at many different videos that were available for my own personalized viewing.

Zachary   June 30th, 2007 11:38 pm ET

CNN,

Did you really listen to what we had to say? There are only 74 comments right now (mine now included) that have said things before in the beta version but it did not get put into the new version. Your relaunch occured today, you have 74 the days in the coming I would assume you’ll be swarmed with comments. Next time, listen, be consistent and show some consistency.

Zachary

Candy   June 30th, 2007 11:41 pm ET

Where is the law section now? That was my favorite section, and it’s missing. Also, where is the time of updates>

Laura   June 30th, 2007 11:42 pm ET

I think the headlines are much harder to read now. Not dark or distinct enough, and a bit too small. I also agree with previous comments that it is quite annoying to have to watch a video to get a story. Please provide a written story option as well.

Anita   June 30th, 2007 11:44 pm ET

I’ve been coming to CNN.com almost every day, usually several times a day, for a decade. For the first time, I’m considering giving Google News a try. I just don’t feel like this makes it easy to get the news quickly.

Please please please move the “More News” section up above the Podcasts, Blogs, and Local sections. I come to CNN.com for the news, not that other stuff. Include it, fine, but put it below the important content. Having more than 2 stories per category would be nice, too. And yes, I’d like a text version of the video stories. Like others, I find it’s much faster to read a story than sit through a video, and if I wanted to watch the stories I’d turn on the TV.

Thank you for considering these and everyone else’s comments.

Greg Lyons   June 30th, 2007 11:49 pm ET

I cannot agree enough with the calls to have a text version of every video story. The videos never seem to load right on my home computer and my work computer doesn’t have speakers. So many times I’ve gone to click on a link only to see that darn video camera icon and no text alternative.

I love CNN’s “just the facts” approach, but this redesign seems to be losing that vibe (I’m looking at you, Funny News header!).

As far as the visuals, I can’t say I’m a fan. It might grow on me, but in the meantime I’ll be searching for a new home page.

Rick   June 30th, 2007 11:52 pm ET

The old site *was* broken, with all kinds of stuff that blocked stuff beneath it.
Hopefully that’s fixed now, and gone is that awefull horizontal stretched black advertisement that blocked text beneath it.

People who can’t see the video’s should go here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

There is one thing still missing, if CNN reports on something they should have links going outward to the source: reporting on the iPhone? have direct link to Apple’s iPhone page. etc.
Sad you merged science with tech.

Greetings from The Netherlands.

Rick

brian   July 1st, 2007 12:00 am ET

where is the science section?
and I agree with earlier comments, I like to READ the news, with the option to watch a video (which I usually can see OVER and OVER again on CNN cable channel anyway). Just the facts, fast.

thanks,

Amir Caspi   July 1st, 2007 12:07 am ET

I prefer the old site in terms of layout and consistency… and the old site was way faster. The new site is SLOOOOOOOW. The heavy use of Flash exacerbates this greatly. As other posters have mentioned, AJAX+DHTML would be a better option, although you must make sure to optimize the AJAX as well.

I’d personally vote for reviving the old layout without all the Flash – it was faster and a more intuitive layout. But, if you must keep the new site, at least make it faster, as right now it is nearly unusable on my machine.

Jenn   July 1st, 2007 12:09 am ET

Where is the Education link? As a teacher, I always checked that first. Please give it back to us! It is so important.

Cato   July 1st, 2007 12:11 am ET

The site works poorly with Mozilla. Hitting the “back” button causes a meta-refresh so to move back I have to roll back manually – either hit my Home button (which is cnn.com) or pull down the history menu and click back on the Cnn splash page.

Eric   July 1st, 2007 12:15 am ET

I really like the new site, but I noticed that you changed how your video is presented. I used to be able to watch it perfectly in Linux, but it seems that your new way doesn’t work at all. I can see the flash play buttons, but they do nothing. Please remember that not all of your readership are on Windows!

Phil J   July 1st, 2007 12:17 am ET

Your new web site looks awful. It is hard on the eyes. Too much white space on the page, and what it with the off white shading around the articles? Have you ever heard that it is easier to read text when you have high contrast between the text and background? Your site does poorly with text\background contrasts. Your use of medium a gray text over off an off white background in areas is hideous.

I agree with others that I want to read about news, not be forced to watch a video. The site has a overall feeling of being “dumbed down”, it is hard to explain.

Your old site is much better; you should go back to it.

Jim S.   July 1st, 2007 12:34 am ET

I am very disappointed with the “new and improved” design for the CNN.com site. I have used CNN as my homepage for years, but alas, I am seriously considering giving that up. From what I can tell, there has been a great deal of change, but very little, if any, improvements to the site.

If CNN wants to really make their website appealable to the masses, then they should make the page customizable. Let each user decide what they want to see and what they don’t want to see. However, I truly do not believe that would ever be done. Just think about how the Cable and Satellite companies force customers to have channels they truly do not want. Wouldn’t it be in the best interest of CNN to have the ability to see what sections the people really want, the sections they really add to their home page, and the sections that they simply delete? As appealing as that is, I certainly won’t hold my breath in anticipation.

Key things that I feel MUST be changed in order to appeal to more people:

1. Put a link for a text version of every video.
2. Seperate the main news topics better.
3. Put the main news topics further up the page. This is supposed to be news, right?
4. Get rid of all the “Fluff” that doesn’t belong on a true news website.

But hey, that’s just me.

Chris G   July 1st, 2007 12:38 am ET

Kudos. I have always been a fan of your site. The redesign is a further improvement— it is very clean, the information is divided and categorized in a very clear and understandable way. I’m also glad you have ditched the “locked left” layout in favor of a dynamically centered layout. It always places the content in the middle of the screen, best for avoiding neck strain, no matter the resolution of one’s monitor.

Martin   July 1st, 2007 12:42 am ET

I didn’t read all of the comments, but after reading some of the first ones, it looks like some people need to update their flash player and allow flash content. It is completely free to update your Flash player, just go here:
www dot adobe dot com/products/flashplayer/
(Sorry, I don’t think that this will let me publish a link, so change the “dot”s to “.”)

I would also recommend using Firefox

As for the new site, I love it. Nice job with it. The new flash based video player is great, and I love how the stories have a “Read” tab and a “Watch” tab. Can’t wait for the Live Video to be ready.

Mare   July 1st, 2007 12:49 am ET

In general, the redesign is a good first draft. Now it has some editing to polish it up a bit. I like it. I am in the camp with the “please have a text link to video stories” and “bring back the date/time stamp” advocates. Very often I don’t have time for a video and just want to scan the text to get the details. And I like knowing if its the very latest version of the story or one I read when I got up 10 hours ago.

As with any changes, people get ruffled out of their comfort zones. Ultimately change is good and CNN is by far my choice for news, regardless of how the website looks. I enjoy the journalism provided by CNN over other news organizations so I will adjust to the site as required (which is minimal).

Thanks for the hard work!

Corey   July 1st, 2007 12:54 am ET

Either the navigation bar along the top should have a fixed width or the news section should expand to fill the frame. The conflicting styles is a bit of an eyesore.

Scott   July 1st, 2007 12:55 am ET

The content area is fine, although I don’t see a huge improvement over the old version.

The biggest problem with the new design is the BOLD RED LINE!

When I visit the site, I feel like I have to duck my head to read the content under the bar. It’s a strange sensation and CNN.com is the only site to ever actually make me have to bob my head to get “under” the header. Drop that line to 1 or 2 pixels and it will be a lot better.

Scott   July 1st, 2007 1:05 am ET

Ya, I just photoshopped a screen grab of the site, and it looks a LOT better (in my opinion) with the red line reduced to 2 pixels.

Also. the flat gray background in the content area looks really bland in this version. perhaps a subtle gradient or a faint pattern fill would make it better. I tried both ideas and I think they both look better than a flat gray.

Bushra   July 1st, 2007 1:07 am ET

Wonderful! Keep it up.

Jonathan Edwards   July 1st, 2007 1:23 am ET

The More news section shouldn’t be hung at the bottom of the page. You should have the basic headings as links on a sidebar towards the left of the page for easy navigation. Display the “More News” categories in a heirarchy, where the most important “categories” of news are 1st, and descend to least important types of news. My suggestion:

“More News”

World »
U.S. »
Politics »
Business »
Science »
Tech »
Health »
Sports »
Travel »
Living »
Entertainment »
Funny News »

And P.S. “More News” is a corny heading.

Jonathan Edwards   July 1st, 2007 1:27 am ET

And one more thing. I really like the feedback option. It fills my eyes with tears to see Time Warner actually listening to their consumers.

Sam Feuer   July 1st, 2007 1:31 am ET

I think CNN is the best news site on the Internet. Keep up the amazing work.

steve   July 1st, 2007 1:44 am ET

i dont like this new design cahnge back or allow to use the old one

rebecca   July 1st, 2007 1:58 am ET

the design isnt bad, i’ll get used to it in time, I’m sure – i’m just wondering what happened to your law section…that was the main reason i kept CNN as my homepage instead of BBC. And I definitely second the above opinions in suggesting that you provide links to articles to accompany all the videos – the video headlines often sound incredibly interesting, but I just dont have time to watch them. I’d love to read the stories though.

Carrie Johnikin   July 1st, 2007 2:07 am ET

I’m lost without the CNN’s signature look of vibrant colors (especially red). Where did you leave the EDUCATION tab? Please add it back. Video feed is a great idea but please don’t overdo it. Although change is good remember to keep key elements on the site that sets CNN apart from the rest. CNN is by far the best news source. Old or new site it’s still my homepage!

Lindsey   July 1st, 2007 2:19 am ET

Great new site, cleaner and easier to navigate. The old site was starting to make me a bit anxious… it was like you just threw the news at a site and just let things randomly land. This site feels more “peaceful”:) and not so random and overwhelming. Good job!

George Vreeland Hill   July 1st, 2007 2:19 am ET

CNN always does it best!
Thank you.
George Vreeland Hill

Matt   July 1st, 2007 2:20 am ET

I like it!

Haydur   July 1st, 2007 2:27 am ET

For people who are complaining, it’s most likely the fear of change. Like all other changes in life, this will take time getting used to.

And why are you guys complaining about less crowding and more white space on the homepage? A news site doesn’t have to be filled to the brim with news links. Less is better, and that is not to say that I think the CNN.com main page has any less links that it should.

And please, no more validation Nazis!

Brien   July 1st, 2007 2:34 am ET

There should be a sort option for the Jeanne Moos videos like there used to be in the old video window.

johnnyb   July 1st, 2007 2:47 am ET

i prefer the older version over the new one mainly because i liked the way it looked, but cnn being the only news site i can look at while I’m at work (everything else is filtered) gave me something to do during down time. Your new version just seems cold with not much going for it. It just seems to impersonnal to me.

Jon Fernandez   July 1st, 2007 3:18 am ET

Well, I wouldn’t take the criticism too harshly. Any change is going to be tough for people to take as you get used to where to find things. I would say so far that the site looks okay, maybe a little cleaner than what it was before, so I’m ready to adapt to the change. Here are some issues though:

1. I get numerous browser errors (object not found, a runtime error has occurred, this page is accessing information that is not under its control …), so you’ve got some security work to do (I’m using IE 7.0).

2. I’m not the type that customizes my web experience much, so I would count on you to give me only the information that I want. I don’t need weather or stock quotes (I go elsewhere if I’m curious about those). To have as much solid news as possible and less fluff would be good.

3. Like many others, I resent that so much of the news requires me to go to a video with commercials. I very much want a text option or I will definitely take cnn off as my home page.

Other than that, I’m okay with the site once I figure out where everything is. If you want one last odd suggestion, I’m starting to go to the goodnews network to check out what’s up. Are you really telling me that there’s just no good news around? Something like: Ohio had a bumper crop, or education scores in history have climbed for the 3rd straight year. These are all made up, but are you sure nothing good is happening out there? Like your Jeanne Moos articles, why not a section on good news? There’s got to be something out there that isn’t so dire and might give us some hope.

Good luck,
JF

Jenn   July 1st, 2007 3:21 am ET

It looks like Steve Jobs designed your site. It liked the old one better, but I’ll probably leave it as my homepage. But like others have said, please provide text with all your video stories of hard news cuz I won’t watch the videos even if I am interested in the story.

AOE   July 1st, 2007 3:23 am ET

The new site layout is very good. This is by far the #1 news site on the web. Excellent job rendering video via Flash and the overal layout. Its alot less cluttered and it is easier on the eyes. A job well done CNN!

Jonathan Stickles   July 1st, 2007 3:53 am ET

Hm, I like it. Still, it would be nice to be able to decide for myself what parts of the page I’m interested in seeing and what is just filling space and can go. If I don’t want the local section, or celebrity news, for example, I’d like to be able to filter out that information.

I also would like to be able to always see a text report instead of having only video. Video is pretty and sometimes nice, but it’s also noisy and flashy and not always the most direct and convenient way to get news, particularly when video advertisements are used.

Brian   July 1st, 2007 3:54 am ET

The new video section doesn’t run on the computer, hung up on loading. I also agree that all video should have a story that doesn’t require to just view the video. I agree it is forcing to look at advertising and not all computers run the video. Good start to the new site, needs some work.

Julie Putnam   July 1st, 2007 4:12 am ET

I greatly miss the Education secton on the front of the website. It is a section I visit daily, and though I see there is an RSS feed to an Education section, my concern is that your focus on Education news will suffer with its loss of prominence. Please add an Education section back to the front of the site. It is far more crucial than something like “Funny News!”

Brandon   July 1st, 2007 4:36 am ET

The new video changes (flash) are much overdue; thanks for taking a cue from Youtube. The previous requirements for video playback were just annoying. I’m not a big fan of the new layout, I preferred the classic design.

Henry Hull   July 1st, 2007 4:44 am ET

I think this is a move in the right direction. I believe that all the major networks should have news message boards with direct links for nearly every story they produce that are visible to anyone who chooses to see them. Why? This is the only way to prevent the news agencies from spinning the story in the way they want to, or the news editor wants to spin it or the corporate chief wants the stories spun. America does not belong to the few, but to the many.
Freedom of speech for both broadcaster and audience is absolutely necessary , and yet the majority of mass media networks, like AOL AND YAHOO for example, are moving in the wrong direction by doing away with the news message boards(at least in any meaningful way.) These internet based MASS MEDIA networks have chosen to cower, and to disengage their public from any meaningful imput. But they are being punished, to be sure, as their business is surely waning.

The real test is not going to be whether you put up a blog , but whether you are able to tolerate a real conversation, with real criticism and unlike AOL AND YAHOO are commited to upholding the right to free speech for all people, and not just for those who were rich enough and powerful enough to buy themselves a broadcasting network.
The future of the United States is in the balance I think. We need the majority of people to care about their nation in these troubled times:how can they ever do that if they are not engaged in the dialogue of their nation, If they are not allowed even to suggest solutions, however rough their tongue?

I hope that CNN stands strong for the first amendment, and if it does, I think it will prosper.

Krzysiek   July 1st, 2007 5:22 am ET

Your new design is not 800×600 compatible !
Please use the “liquid stretching” technique.

Thanks :)

Ryan   July 1st, 2007 5:35 am ET

I LOVE the improve video — FINALLY CNN joins the 21st Century with their new Flash format.

I HATE the design. Looks like it took all of 10 minutes to put together.

John Bristor   July 1st, 2007 5:43 am ET

You have many javascript bugs. Making the site nearly unusable for me. Put your browser in debug mode and see how many.

Joey Greg   July 1st, 2007 6:10 am ET

Why do none of the videos work for me now? I try to access them with both FIrefox and Safari and they just don’t work. I had no problems with them on the old website.

You’ve really screwed it up, as far as I’m concerned.

Ted Willard   July 1st, 2007 6:17 am ET

I like the new site, however, what would really make it convenient is if when moving along the subject bar (U.S. News, Sports, Business, etc., etc.,) you could see a “flyout” feature, like on MSNBC, which would show you what articles could be read.

pamdodd   July 1st, 2007 6:40 am ET

I think I like the cleaner, crisper design. It will take getting used to. I agree with many of the other criticisms, however. I especially don’t like the sense that you’ve lowered yourself to pandering to voyeurism like other news and entertainment sites.

john   July 1st, 2007 6:41 am ET

What….? no Lou Dobbs?

sah   July 1st, 2007 7:00 am ET

ok, I like the new design. But please update the pic on the front page because it is there since yesterday afternoon. It’s getting boring. I mean the pic with the car in flames in Glasgow airport…it’s enough!

Chris Tsui   July 1st, 2007 7:01 am ET

I’m extremely satisfied with the new look and layout – I have absolutely no problems whatsoever with it. Video also loads faster than before. Thank you guys for making my favorite Internet news source even better!

sah   July 1st, 2007 7:03 am ET

also, please dont give only video options for some news. They should be accompanied by a text option. I try to avoid videos as much as possible because of the advertisment. They tend to last 15 to 30 second and it is very annoying. Video advertisments shold last no more than 5 seconds; smart people usually dont want to waste so much time.

Eugene Elliott   July 1st, 2007 7:11 am ET

I have to agree with the detractors. First it has been too hard to figure out how to contact CNN or to make a post in the past. I did not right off see that this problem has been improved. There was nothing wrong with the previous format and no reason to change it. The new one has too much emphsis on vidios and the annoying commercials at the start. The new format is cold and sterile. I like to imagine that I am reading a newspaper when I look at a news web site.

On the good side you did not become a tabloid with the MSNBC style of celeb and entertaiment emphsis.

Paul Levy   July 1st, 2007 7:12 am ET

Very nice. Sharper, cleaner… I like it.

Matt   July 1st, 2007 7:14 am ET

I love the new design! Videos uploaded very fast, and I think the front page looks great! Good job CNN!

Stan Kain   July 1st, 2007 7:21 am ET

For those people who don’t like all the video on the new website, here is a solution. Switch your computer operating system from Microsoft Windows to a secure Linux operating system (used by several million computer users), using the highly recommended Firefox browser and you’ll no longer have to deal with video on the new CNN website. You won’t see any. All you will see is a black box where the video is supposed to be.

The “new and improved” CNN website has completely excluded Linux/Firefox users from viewing any video, at all. The old website worked perfectly with the same system.

Fortunately for news video fans, literally every other news source website is Linux/Firefox friendly, so there are options for a favorite news website!

Lisa   July 1st, 2007 7:23 am ET

Love it! Clean, easy, simple, no popups. Will be perfect for the iPhone also. Thanks!

Richard   July 1st, 2007 7:24 am ET

CNN, please don’t listen to all the negative comments above. At the end of the day, most people will only comment if they are unhappy with something – the vast majority of people, who love the new site, are too busy seeing all the new features to be bothered posting a comment. Well done CNN, and keep up the good work. Don’t be put off by some people’s unwillingness to change.

You’ve just created the web’s best news site! I love it!

Marie Carter   July 1st, 2007 7:25 am ET

Don’t like it!
CNN “was” my homepage because of the way it stood out like no other, nowit looks just like every other, very plain, nothing grabs my attention.
Also, I agree with everyone else about the video, I want to read, not watch.

Pam   July 1st, 2007 7:42 am ET

I appreciate the effort, but I really prefer the old version. Too much scrolling on the homepage to get to the news, and really too much fluff/sensationalism lately. The videos are nice sometimes, but I agree with the posting that I prefer to read the story. To be honest, I’ll probably switch to another web site for my default page.

Jim Baker   July 1st, 2007 7:48 am ET

Nice look!
Could you include a button on the very first page that would lead to less “content rich” versions of your pages for us less-than-modern computer, slower-internet-connection users?
Thanks!
Jim

Ellen   July 1st, 2007 7:51 am ET

CNN is my home page, and I was very pleased to see this new look. It is fresh, sleek, modern, and easier for me to navigate. Also, for the first time, I can view the videos to completion.

It was time for some changes, and I am pleased with the ones you made.

Leslee Sinclair, Atlanta, GA   July 1st, 2007 7:55 am ET

Thanks for listening —from a Mac user. Can finally see the video. Been asking for over a year. But folks, I can still remember how to read. How about an option for reading instead of watching sometimes.

Mike   July 1st, 2007 8:01 am ET

LOVE the new website. Congrats on a wonderful design.

James   July 1st, 2007 8:03 am ET

The font is “too light” in color and hard to read. This website looks like it was white-washed.

Manny   July 1st, 2007 8:08 am ET

Ever hear of color?

Mike Jacobs   July 1st, 2007 8:15 am ET

Nice job – very clear, clean and pleasing to the eye! Well done.

Samantha   July 1st, 2007 8:18 am ET

I am a web professional myself, so I can sympathize with you on how the last several months, weeks, and days have been!

I really like the new design. I think it looks a lot cleaner and not so bogged down. From a usability standpoint I think the design is much more intuitive, especially when you are on a single story. Love how you can shift between the story and video.

The only thing I will say that I truly miss is the CNN Pipeline player. My husband and I got rid of our TV about two years ago and have since relied on Pipeline for the most up-to-date video news. We really liked being able to open the video full-screen as well so we could both watch a story with ease (especially since we have larger than normal monitors as we’re both web gurus / techies!). I’ll still rely on CNN Video, but I’m still partial to your player. I hope that you don’t get rid of your Pipeline channels / programs / reporters. Loved how freshly the news was presented by some of your younger staff.

And to the points to what other people are saying about video vs. video AND text. It was the same in the old design. Sometimes you only had either / or.

Overall – good job, keep up the good work, and have yourselves a nice glass of champagne!

Chris   July 1st, 2007 8:19 am ET

I do not like the new layout. Lots of wasted space and doesn’t adjust to my monitor. Don’t fix what isn’t broke. Go back to the old layout.

Hal   July 1st, 2007 8:22 am ET

“Hot Topics” should flow after “Popular News”. Visually it appears to be an afterthought. Weather before HT just doesn’t ring true.

I also have a problem with the wide left margin. That’s a lot unclaimed real estate which should be utilized. Looks unfinished. The right margin seems to the same width as the left margin and while not as critical in terms of unclaimed space it should be used. But you may be working within some constraint dictated by handhelds…Palm, Blackberry, iPhone .

As a reader of CNN.com since day 1, other than my two comments I think the site looks terrific. The navigation is formatted logically and clear and easy to follow.

Great job.

Alan   July 1st, 2007 8:31 am ET

Great!! I have been watching the evolution of the beta verson to this version and it is fantastic.

I mostly like the absence of the advertisement at the top right–good going with that!

I like the larger print and the absence of advertisements, teasers, and all manner of little flashing boxes or letters trying to catch my attention. In this regard, I LIKE THE LARGER PRINT. I don’t need a news website to be like the cockpit of an airplane. I can play flight simulator to have that experience. I think others, too, could benefit from the decrease in busy stimulation that came from the former website.

Continue to stick to substantive news and downplay the banal–like entertainment news, which is really a contradiction in terms. Again, tell us what we need to know, now what has the most chance of grabbing someone’s eyeballs–that would be appreciated. There are so many little electronic gadgets (ipods, blackberries, cell phones, iphone, on-&on…) to swallow people’s attention that to try to compete with all of those will make any web-based news nothing but tabloid. You’ve avoided that so far–so try to keep it up.

I love the site!….Alan

vixster   July 1st, 2007 8:38 am ET

it’s much slower! please put back the time stamp (of last update) next to date.

Jim Baumann   July 1st, 2007 8:48 am ET

Definitely NOT an improvement!

What happened to the LAW site?

David B.   July 1st, 2007 8:49 am ET

Hrmmm . . . I am not sure but it seems as though there is much less accessible news than there used to be. I miss the Science category (where did it go?). I often came to CNN to catch up on news. The recent but not *now* stories are difficult to access.

I don’t mind the new layout, but I would like to see the content closer to the old version!

tulip   July 1st, 2007 8:52 am ET

GREAT new look. Much more user friendly and not so ugly and cluttered. News is a straightforward medium and I love the grouping of stories and the clean lines. Keep up the good work!

Jim Z   July 1st, 2007 9:06 am ET

The new site is too cold, too sterile, and far too BORING.

You have lost all personality. There is no longer any CNN identify.

You have become just another website.

It is as someone was just too lazy to come up with something creating.

This is sad…………..

David   July 1st, 2007 9:09 am ET

I prefer the old version. And I agree with all the respondents that you should always have a readable version of any story, not just a video version. I won’t view the videos.

Frank   July 1st, 2007 9:11 am ET

The video works better with Linux now.

However, at the moment I can see only the commercials.

THANK YOU FOR DUMPING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER!!!!

Andrew   July 1st, 2007 9:17 am ET

This is sad! Looks like a undergraduate graphic designer straight out of 1999 thought this one up….hard to use and harder on the eyes! I’m changing my homepage.

Michae Anderson   July 1st, 2007 9:18 am ET

As a developer and user of opensource software, thank you. Getting rid of the requirements of Windows Media player allows me to view your content including videos. Cudo’s to you for taking a great step to reach addition readers/viewers.

While I have always preferred CNN both on-line and on television, I frankly have little reason to go to the other new outlets, I can see everything, here everything, and of course your ability to stay on top of the news is outstanding.

The new look is also easier on the eye for someone who spends 80+ hours a week on the computer.

Jane   July 1st, 2007 9:23 am ET

If it was not broken – Why fix it. I liked the headers on the side. Now you have a bland generic page with what looks like smaller print headlines.

Rob   July 1st, 2007 9:23 am ET

The new look is great! Hope to see a similar appearance on all pages. I have used cnn.com as my home page for many years.

John Lytle   July 1st, 2007 9:26 am ET

The new site is still not validating at the W3C
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F

The headers could have been easily scaleable too at various font sizes. The site looks better, but the code is still not using proper semantics and use of web standards.

August   July 1st, 2007 9:27 am ET

I stay current on news and review CNN multiple times each day. I read most of the major stories and I read fast (much faster than average), but seldom watch the videos. The videos take too much time and do not have much content. The point is, have a text version of each article and not just video. I know video is in and you think you need to have it because we have the capability. Okay, you can have both, but some of us still know how to read. I see I am not alone on this issue.

Ray   July 1st, 2007 9:32 am ET

Very nice job, CNN. It is a clean and smart look. The integration of media through a single interface is a refreshing change. It is nice to see a website with original ideas and going for them. And yes, thank you for getting rid of that junk Windows Media Player.

Katherine   July 1st, 2007 9:33 am ET

Offering text with video would be wonderful! Or, get rid of the ads that I am forced to watch before the news comes on.

And create a new catagory: Paris Hilton. That way, she is in her own little world, and anyone remotely interested in her can be informed of her every move, while the rest of us can get the REAL news.

Get rid of the weather box. People can check their local weather for more immediate and accurate reports.

I can never understand why companies feel the need to revamp a format that was already really good. Sure, tweak it, update it. But don’t completely change the brand.

I’ll use it for a few days, and see…

Pat   July 1st, 2007 9:35 am ET

Why is the news at the bottom?

Local news and bloggs in the middle looks like a young kid designed the site.

Headlines first , then key area headlines, then local stuff, then lets communicate blogs etc.

I hope this will change. or Fox here I come.

latisha   July 1st, 2007 9:38 am ET

Love the new look. Especially the video section the ability to write comments on stories!

Michael   July 1st, 2007 9:50 am ET

On the first impression good user interface design so lets take a close look…..

Janet L   July 1st, 2007 9:58 am ET

The site seems very congested and hard to follow. The print font is too small and lines are too close together. I’m not crazy about the new design at all.

Scott   July 1st, 2007 9:58 am ET

Bring back the EDUCATION link. Huge oversight. Many of us read it.

Eliza   July 1st, 2007 10:08 am ET

I’m a longtime cnn.com visitor and probably stop by at least once a day, if not more.

I love the new layout. I love the grey background and the curved corners of the boxes separating each department. It looks very classy.

But I do think there is too much bright red font. It’s a little blinding. I really like the use of grey as a font color – which you use sparingly – but I have heard from friends when I’ve used it myself that they can’t read it (especially if they are a bit far-sighted).

Also, my personal opinion is that links should always be underlined. That’s something that’s consistent on the web and people expect it.

I TOTALLY agree with what other people are saying about articles in video. I think if you offer video, you should also offer the print version of a story. For example, there’s a story today that is not available in text entitled “Man, 19, impregnates girl, 11″ that I would like to know more about (!), but my kids are in the next room and I’d prefer they not hear it. So I’ll have to read it somewhere else…

Otherwise, great job!

Robert & Martina Rasmussen   July 1st, 2007 10:18 am ET

I have to say that both my wife and myself that this new layout is not professional news
site. The site should be easy to use and the navigation and layout on here is not. This is
the worse low for CNN and think the old design layout was far better and stable. News
needs to be easy and catchy and this is plain awful. Next time test it out to make sure its
user friendly. I might go elsewhere for my news.

Bob   July 1st, 2007 10:27 am ET

No complaints with the new website. Works fine for me using Firefox. Videos play quickly with Movie Media Player 1.0 (Adobe Flash Player/addons/plugins), which by the way is free to download. Keep up the excellent work CNN.

Maggie   July 1st, 2007 10:29 am ET

Oh dear! I’m sorry to report I do not enjoy the changes! I do not have high-speed. My ’slow-speed’ is slow enough that, for instance, I cannot pick up any video clips of any news stories – or, perhaps I can, but so far I have not waited long enough for any of them to become “readable”. I appreciated the existing (previous) format very much. It gave me a range of possible news stories, covering the gamut of current ‘main stories’ to regions of the world, to science/technology. This “single page” presentation of so many possibilities worked very well for me. I now feel as if I shown limited choices. To navigate to more possibilities, I need to link to different “section” pages. On a slow speed connection, this is not to my liking! I have had link to CNN as a “daily check” and will probably drop the habit if the new format continues. Sorry!

Living in Spain   July 1st, 2007 10:29 am ET

I read CNN.com everyday as I am currently spending a lot of time in Spain. Its my link backl to what’s happening in the US. I LOVE the new look and feel of the site!! Its clean and efficient. The old format was just too busy and distracting. Bravo and good luck.

mk   July 1st, 2007 10:34 am ET

Good job! I *love* it.

TheDetroitChannel   July 1st, 2007 10:49 am ET

best comment so far: #122 by henry hull.

and i’ve read every one.

vanessa   July 1st, 2007 10:51 am ET

re the weather section: now can only get a static radar map. Please bring back the moving version so we can tell which direction and rate the precipitation is moving.

Ed   July 1st, 2007 10:59 am ET

What’s with the warnings from IE about accessing content not under your control? Are you serving adverts? Are you linking to spam, pop ups, pop unders, viruses, worms, what? Cut it out!

Bryna   July 1st, 2007 11:01 am ET

Looks nice, feels nice, but what happened to the education section????? Certainly you can’t think that putting in a “Funny News” section will make us all forget about the state of education, both good and bad? Anyhow, like the look, not sure about all those ads on the right side, but willing to go along for the ride. Thanks as always for up to date news, but again, fix the education aspect – what were you all thinking?

Glen   July 1st, 2007 11:03 am ET

Congrats on your New & Improved website! i have always used CNN.com as my homepage, but was endlessly frustrated by not being able to view your video stories on my Mac.

The download times were eternal, and many times the videos would not play at all … so i would copy & paste your video headline, and find the story on Google video.

So, nice work :-)

andreasviklund   July 1st, 2007 11:04 am ET

Nice to see that the blog is backed up by wordpress.com! There are still lots of unnecessary validation errors in the code, and a modern site of today should definitely use valid code. But other than that, I’m happy about the improvement and the choice to go for simplicity rather than bloated visuals. I’ll stick around in the future as well, no doubt about that.

dniq   July 1st, 2007 11:09 am ET

Can’t see what was wrong with the old site… Plus, with the new site there’s now no Full Screen video option, which sucks. One more reason to use CBS for video news… :(

Kathy   July 1st, 2007 11:12 am ET

The old website was better this new one is boreing there isn’t much colour in it but other wise it looks okay.

Steve   July 1st, 2007 11:20 am ET

Hate it! All fluff and no headlines. I could see all of the headlines by type and dig deeper if I wanted. This used to my #1 site for news, I will now have to put-up with Yahoo and MSNBC. Good-by.

R Lee   July 1st, 2007 11:28 am ET

Seems like every time CNN ‘refreshes’ its presentation, it just dumbs it down…. whether it is headline news or the website. All fluff and less real news. I’ve got to find a new homepage…

Brian   July 1st, 2007 11:28 am ET

New site design is great. Lose the orbitz pop up in the beginning and it’s perfect.

wolverine   July 1st, 2007 11:29 am ET

I use Netscape 7.0 as a browser to read the news on CNN.
Sadly, your new format, as of this morning, does not fit the screen.
The left half is cut off.
It has nothing to do with my prefrences or any of my of my settings
which have remained unchanged.
As a test, I visited CNN, using browsers Internet Explorer 6.0
as well Opera and there was no such problem.
I would appreciate it, if you would kindly check your software &
have this problem corrected.
Thank You.

B.B.   July 1st, 2007 11:36 am ET

PLEASE!!!…Bring back the “old” format..the sooner the better…Thanx….

I.Link   July 1st, 2007 11:39 am ET

I think it’s a great improvement. The design is clean, clear and has a modern feeling. The type is friendly and inviting.

Bob Eldridge   July 1st, 2007 11:41 am ET

Just too plain! Need some color – red?
Get someone whith a little imagination!

It’s worst than Fox News and that’s bad.
I like pictures and less videos.
The space section is my favorate , But I would say Fox is better covering space news.
A nice section to add would be Hot Topics with Lou Dobbs.

JRH   July 1st, 2007 11:44 am ET

I agree with some other posters about not being forced to watch video that is preceeded by a 30 second commercial. If I want to watch TV, I will watch TV. I come to the web to read. Also, I’m missing the Science tab…is it coming back?

Ron Wood   July 1st, 2007 11:45 am ET

Well, I’m no technophile, but I know what I like and don’t like. I like the old site. I don’t like the new one. It is not pleasing to the eye, the info is not as well organized as in the past. Too much change causes some emotional disconnect. I know this is all feelings based, but a lot of your readers will have “feelings” when they look at your site. My old “friend” has died and the new kid is trying too hard. Incremental change is easier to swallow.

Kent   July 1st, 2007 11:45 am ET

The new format doesn’t ring my bell. In fact the first time it came up I got rather irritated because what I was looking for was no longer there forcing me to go searching to find it. What I was looking for was the link to programming specifically Lou Dobbs Tonight and The Situation Room. Those links made things much easier. It wouldn’t have to be specific links a general link to programming would work for me.

Karen   July 1st, 2007 11:47 am ET

Awesome! I like being able to distinguish easily between text stories and video stories. Very nice!

Aaron   July 1st, 2007 11:49 am ET

Phenomenal job on the new site, CNN! You have kept it fresh, relevant and easy to navigate. MUCH BETTER!

Erik O.   July 1st, 2007 11:50 am ET

I don’t mind the new design, but I would recommend a few tweaks:

1) Greater color contrast for the hypertext. It’s hard to quickly tell what has and has not been clicked on.
2) Move the News Sections up higher on the page, at least higher than the human interest/partnership/fluff content.
3) Put more than two headlines under each News Section heading. I want a quick view of the headlines in the news of each section rather than having to click through.

I like the new Local and Weather Sections, but they need to be less center-of-the-page dominating.

Numbers 2 and 3 are very important to me. #1 is simply a defense of my PC strained eyes. Otherwise generally solid changes.

Tony   July 1st, 2007 11:54 am ET

FINALLY !!!!! I am finally able to play videos on the new format. I am a Mozilla Firefox (browser) user and have previously been unable to view any videos. I only hope that other news sites ( MSNBC etc.) will follow suit with the changes that CNN has made to its format and coding. Thanks CNN !!!

ryecrisp   July 1st, 2007 11:54 am ET

Looks fine.

Steve   July 1st, 2007 11:58 am ET

Your NEW website looks like cheap kitsch.
If you are trying to attract a broader audience, then change the colors.
If you are only interested in showing “cheap” news and being patriotic Americans, then keep the RED WHITE AND BLUE format.
For the other majority of people who do NOT live in the usa,There are better looking INTERNATIONAL news websites.

Steve   July 1st, 2007 12:00 pm ET

…. I also agree with many posters in that it feels as if your just “dumbing down” the news. But maybe it is what people want or need.

Vicente   July 1st, 2007 12:08 pm ET

The USA TODAY look, here we come! Now all CNN needs is a permanent link for tracking Paris Hilton news, and it will have completed it’s fall. I recall a decade or so ago when CNN was a respected source of hard news, now it’s just another infotainment outlet.

Marlena   July 1st, 2007 12:09 pm ET

Bring back the “updated hh:mm” to the top of the page. It’s very helpful to see the last time the page was updated, not just the last day.

scott j.   July 1st, 2007 12:10 pm ET

missing time updated at the top of the page… hard to read… but it’s all we got… will get used to it…..how about letting the readers set up their own page…

Brian   July 1st, 2007 12:18 pm ET

Education news was sacrificed to make room for Funny News?!? Even if I wasn’t an educator, I’d still be insulted. Granted, now that I have to scroll down so far to even get to the More News section, I probably won’t even bother.

Susan   July 1st, 2007 12:21 pm ET

Bring back Education section.

Move “More News” to immediately after the “Latest News” section.

Thank you for more text stories and fewer required videos. Quicker as well as easier to view at work.

The old design was better.

Michael F   July 1st, 2007 12:22 pm ET

I don’t not like the design. It’s different, but clean. Too much space between the headlines and the news sections, however. Even with tiny fonts and a big screen like mine, there’s too much scrolling.
But my biggest concern is content. Yes, you have to have a text option for a story or I WILL NOT click. I’ll go somewhere else that has that covered to read about it. Most importantly: no more education news, or science news, or (most important for me) no legal news? But, of course, funny news gets its own space. This shows to me where your priorities are. I don’t mind having funny news, but when you add funny news and remove valid, substantive news, then I have to go somewhere else to learn that the Supreme Court recently invalidated a century-old rule of antitrust law. So you can tell me about the pink pig that flies.

Eric   July 1st, 2007 12:24 pm ET

The site is way too plain; the old one was so much better. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Eduard Farkas   July 1st, 2007 12:29 pm ET

Congrat for the new look but…I’am using IE 6.0 at home and IE 7.0 at work and it seams that I can’t see any of your videos. Shows Loading…. and that’s it. Am I missing something, maybe a player, a driver ? Can you please help me ?
Regards,
Edy

Edward H.   July 1st, 2007 12:34 pm ET

All I want to do is summarize.

1) People resist change. They’ll get used to it.
2) You’d better reinstitute the Education link up top; the vote is in.
3) Resoundingly, text stories to accompany ALL video. If there is only one thing you should take away from these comments, this is the one.

Gary S.   July 1st, 2007 12:40 pm ET

Ugh. You didn’t have anyone over the age of 25 look at the site before you put it up did you?

Simply awful.

Jeff K   July 1st, 2007 12:43 pm ET

I am very disappointed that CNN has decided to put commercials before their “free” videos. I paid for Pipeline so I didn’t have to watch the commercials. This is no longer an option. The quality of the video is great, but being forced to watch commercials before I get to the video will keep me off your site.

Josh   July 1st, 2007 12:44 pm ET

That BOLD font makes it VERY DIFFICULT TO READ
WHEN LOTS OF STORIES ARE LISTED
ONE RIGHT AFTER THE OTHER WITH NOT
ENOUGH SPACE BETWEEN THE LINES ITS LIKE
ONE GIANT BLOCK OF UNREADABLE BOLD TEXT

PS Video on the web will always be a great OPTION for news!
BUT a lot of people like to READ Their news and browse
at their own pace! Don’t FORCE us to watch LINEAR videos
that take away our freedom to skim!

____

Hope you’re not too proud to admit your mistakes.
CNN.com won’t be my primary news site until these problems
are addressed.

mblind   July 1st, 2007 12:52 pm ET

New Cnn.com is GREAT.. I love it.. Good job!

bob   July 1st, 2007 12:56 pm ET

I like the new design a lot! Very clean, nice interactive elements. The video is fantastic – flash video is instantaneous to load and looks great. It’s nice that video isn’t presented in a pop up anymore. It makes it feel like it wasn’t just an afterthought, but rather an integrated part of the reporting. Nice job guys! I don’t know why so many people are negative about it….

Julie   July 1st, 2007 1:12 pm ET

As several others have already said, the Education section is missing! It is the one section I always checked. Other than that, I like the clean, contemporary look of the new page. Change is hard, but if we don’t try to improve ourselves, then where would we be? Congrats for all your hard work.

Carolyn   July 1st, 2007 1:12 pm ET

Where is the science section? Are you kidding? I do not like the page at all and will probably change my home page to something else.

Jeff K   July 1st, 2007 1:39 pm ET

In regards to commercials, The GM of the website said this:

UPDATE: Follow-up note to CNN Pipeline subscribers from the GM
June 28, 2007

Yikes. Ye of little faith! Let me see if I can tamp down some of your concerns. First, the stories of Pipeline’s death are greatly exaggerated. All we’re basically doing is taking it from a pay downloadbale player/service and integrating it into CNN.com overall to make it accessible to the millions of people who use our site everyday. You’ll still get all the great content from around the world including CNNI; you just won’t have to pay. Bottom line, we’re just making it easier (and cheaper) for everyone to access and we’re changing the name… it’s just rolled into our new and improved CNN.com Video offering.
And see if this helps: when we launch, there will be NO COMMERCIALS, much less the type of repetitive ones you’ve apparently come to expect from us. Over time, we will experiment with different types of ad units, but (as we are all high-volume internet users ourselves) we’re concerned as much about user experience as we are about our business demands. We’ll take our time to get this right.

I hope you live up to your word.

Frieda Tieder   July 1st, 2007 1:41 pm ET

Those of us that are older but not brain dead enough for Fox News would appreciate a larger font choice. I have looked everywhere for a font button. Thanks and keep Wolf!

Don   July 1st, 2007 1:57 pm ET

It’s nice but I believe you could’ve utilized more space on the sides for content. There seems to be a little too much space used overall. I liked the previous look because it was tighter and easier to pick up headlines without scanning too far.

Alan   July 1st, 2007 2:32 pm ET

Just two follow-up comments and suggestions. That is, make the layout customizable so that I can choose what comes up first and where–kind of like on Google news. Also, DO bring back the Education and Science sections. Overall, the change is GREAT!…

Jessica   July 1st, 2007 2:34 pm ET

I’m upset.

1. There’s no education or science section.
2. It takes too long to scroll down to other news.
3. I don’t watch video. How many people really do? List the video alongside the story and give us the option to skip video; reading is quicker.
4. I don’t like the bland, light background colors.
5. This looks too much like Washington Post’s lame relaunch. I don’t wanted added video; I just want quick access to lots of stories–like you used to have.

Richard Aronson   July 1st, 2007 2:40 pm ET

Too much is missing that I found useful before, especially links to CNN’s partner’s web sites such as Time Magazine, SI, and so forth. You are no longer an aggregator of stories; you are now just CNN. That makes you less useful to me.

David Charles Walker   July 1st, 2007 2:43 pm ET

New design looks great! Very clean and elegant.

Sarah   July 1st, 2007 2:57 pm ET

While I like your new site, I miss your Law section. Is there a possibility it will return?
thanks.

Paul Martz27   July 1st, 2007 3:03 pm ET

Thanks for getting back online I now have a place to post what I agree with and more importantly what I take execption with.

fabricio vai   July 1st, 2007 3:31 pm ET

Better design. Snapier. I like the video section. I don’t like sites that work with realplayer or microsoft media

Chris   July 1st, 2007 3:43 pm ET

Since the new video player is “inline” with the main site, I can’t browse through the site and watch a particular video report at the same time. Perhaps this is just “power user” desired functionality but it’s not like your audience is getting less sophisticated.

Please allow the ability to ‘tear off’ the video player. Thanks!

Kristen   July 1st, 2007 4:13 pm ET

I’ve given this a lot of thought and spent a long time looking over the site and getting used to it. The bottom line is, I and other people will get used to the change. It’s not stunning, but it’s not terrible. I understand that a lot of work went into it, and here are what I think are the best ways to improve it and help people appreciate it better:
1. LISTEN to the people clamoring for text in addition to video, even if it’s the kind of article where all you’ve done is literally type up exactly what the reporter says.
2. Listen to the people wanting you to move “more news” up the page, directly under the top story and popular news. Most of use come here to scan the news and see what’s going on big picture. We come to CNN for the big stories and we want them immediately. We don’t come here for the weather or the local news; they’re nice options, but put them at the bottom so that the majority of us who won’t use them don’t have to scroll past.
3. Change “Funny News” back to “Offbeat News.” It sounded so much more professional that way.
4. The color scheme IS a bit bland and unfriendly. Instead of all this gray space in the background, do what someone above suggested and add some sort of pattern or texture or something to it. (And maybe make it blue? I miss all the blue that used to be around the old site. Or make the subject headings at the top of the page blue, kind of like they used to be.) Shiny, swirly, whatever, just make it more interesting back there. As Hollywood has figured out, people like to look at pretty things, and it’s currently not very attractive. The look is generally nice…just not enough color.
5. Finally, and most importantly to me – where is the SCIENCE section? Why on earth do you have to go to the tech page and then scroll all the way down to click on the link to take you to the science articles? How could you bury Science in the Tech page???? They’re COMPLETELY separate, and the last thing this country needs is a harder time accessing scientific topics. Include a link on the Tech page by all means, but give it its own heading as well. I’m really hoping you’ve only done that because the Science page isn’t updated the way the rest of the site is, and for some reason you’re waiting until it is before you make it one of the headings at the top of the page. You’ve certainly got plenty of room to add the headings for Science, Education, and Law that are currently missing and causing a bit of outrage here.

Do some or all of that, and I think you’ll end up pleasing most people.

andy   July 1st, 2007 4:30 pm ET

headlines are way too small and when you’ve already clicked on one the color is not different enough from ones you haven’t yet clicked. i am 25 yrs old and am straining my eyes to see the headlines. also, too much wasted margin space, a margin is nice – but this is just too much – it’s a waste.

Robert   July 1st, 2007 4:50 pm ET

Where is the education section?

Robert Harper   July 1st, 2007 4:58 pm ET

An axion of design is to avoid optical clutter and your new design does just that. And contrary to what someone else wrote earlier, to me it bears no resemblence at all to the BBC website which is cluttered and messy. I think it is a major step forward.

Robert Harper

Jonathan   July 1st, 2007 5:05 pm ET

Graphics are pleasing and the site appears to be streamlined. More cohesiveness throughout with clearer tabs.

BUT, it takes more time to load the pages then before, 8-10 seconds and that is not acceptable.

Full video page is a nice addition but taking the user to a self contained video page, then requiring the user to select the back button (without any back links on the back) to return to the previous page is clunky at best. You should place your navigation menu from the homepage at the top of the video page.

Chris   July 1st, 2007 5:24 pm ET

Very nice: clean, easy to navigate, and modern. I’m impressed it loads so well. The conversion to Flash for video is a welcome relief, too.

A much smoother relaunch than USA Today’s project. Congrats.

Carrie   July 1st, 2007 5:36 pm ET

I think it’s great! Looks great, streamlined, easy to navigate. I go to CNN every day for natl/intl news, and I think this improves my experience.
I wish, however, that you would offer text stories of the videos you have posted – esp for those of us who read the news at work.
Thanks and nice job!

Nathan   July 1st, 2007 5:44 pm ET

CNN is my #1 stop for news. I think the new design looks sharp.

Whose idea was it to put an ad at the top of the home page that starts to activate AFTER the page has loaded so that the entire contents of the page start moving while you’re trying to read? Let me guess..someone thinks you can FORCE people to watch advertising by irritating them. Does that sound like something that might work? I don’t think so.

As for videos, I agree with others. I do NOT often want to watch a video–I often prefer to read the story. Videos are okay, but there should always be a story to read for those who prefer reading.

Thank you for all your hard work. CNN has been my favorite news source for more than 6 years, and there’s got to be a good reason for that.

carol   July 1st, 2007 5:56 pm ET

Missing Science, Education and Law. Your new page looks like MSN or some other floofy site, and gives about as much pertinent info. Your former presentation was easy to navigate and gave a fairly complete presentation of what was happening. This format is a nightmare to try to find anything other than the few chosen snippets. I’m changing my home page to another site until you get serious about presenting news again. :(

Lee Adams   July 1st, 2007 6:07 pm ET

Bring back Science, Education, Law!!!! Worse comes to worse, I’d even sacrifice Paris Hilton.

Also I agree with an earlier comment, The videos are great, but sometimes I’d rather just take a quick look at the printed story!!

Ricardo Torres   July 1st, 2007 6:22 pm ET

Love the new site. Simplicity reigns. Very “Apple” like and as a Mac user I’m happy the the video is now compatible with the Mac OS browsers. Congratulations and keep it up.

Doc   July 1st, 2007 6:27 pm ET

The site is fine, but your writers still can’t speak English:

“Police have carried out a controlled explosion on a vehicle at the hospital treating a suspect in the attack on Scotland’s busiest airport.”

Grammar 101. F-minus.

Robert Osorio   July 1st, 2007 6:30 pm ET

I like the new look. I could not view the old main page in Firefox with non-standard size fonts (which I have to use on a high res display). The new page looks fine in Firefox. Thank you.

Edward   July 1st, 2007 6:34 pm ET

Don’t like it at all. Too crowded and not as easy to navigate as the “old” site. As the saying goes,” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”. I’m changing my hompage to MSNBC.

JSmall   July 1st, 2007 7:18 pm ET

When the redesigned page popped up, it was so bleak looking that I thought something was wrong with my PC! If it stays, I guess I’ll get used to it., but I far prefer the previous look.

Nate   July 1st, 2007 7:30 pm ET

Your new site looks great– huge improvement over the old version.

greg   July 1st, 2007 8:05 pm ET

There is too much video. I can no longer view many of the articles since my work blocks anything but the simplest html. Its too bad since I used to view CNN all day long.
Plus I don’t really care for the video on the web. I’d rather read the articles. Leave the other for T.V

Jowell   July 1st, 2007 8:07 pm ET

Excellent!!!.

Simple, but elegant, everything is in place.

Keep up the good work.

Dr. Kani Blackwell   July 1st, 2007 8:40 pm ET

I cannot believe that you removed “Education News” from your home page. Shame on you, you are negating a very important aspect of our society. I am so disappointed and only hope that the omission was either a mistake or a temporary lapse in practice.

Sign me, Educator for 40 years and an advocate for change when it benefits people and society as whole. DrB (Kani)

Kat   July 1st, 2007 8:43 pm ET

Where is your education section? I realize its not a national priority or anything, but I liked your Education news.

David   July 1st, 2007 9:00 pm ET

1. So many comments from those who don’t like change. Change can be good, if it is good change.

2. I like the less cluttered look more than my lament for the loss of “personality.” It’s not personality I want, it’s news.

3. I’m a teacher. What, education isn’t important enough to warrant a heading? And no science? Who made these changes, a Republican?

Dee   July 1st, 2007 11:38 pm ET

I kinda like it, I kinda don’t. Maybe it just needs getting used to, I can’t seem to find stuff like I could before. It’s still my homepage, will always be my homepage. I do have one suggestion….can you always have a “read” version when you have videos? Highspeed is not available in the area I work and a lot of times I see something that looks informative or what not but it’s only a video. Thanks!

Vanessa   July 2nd, 2007 12:01 am ET

Good Effort. Clean, which is important.

However, I don’t like how the global navigation is left aligned whereas the rest of the content (body and search box) is centered. It makes the unit feel disjointed. Either everything should be left-aligned or centered.

Also, since you have now muted your site’s colors significantly, each color is more noticeable – when you have a red breaking news box, it comes across as too loud. I think the prime real estate placement is enough to call my attention. The harsh red bg is not necessary. Did love that I could close it – and used it immediately.

Again, great effort.

johns   July 2nd, 2007 12:39 am ET

THe main picture on the first, opening page seems too small, please make it larger….seems that you have the space. Its too small in that it gives a basic idea on the main topic but is too small to be of any photographic value. spring for the big bucks, make it bigger.

Hank   July 2nd, 2007 12:42 am ET

I would love the LAW section back in the headers. Only thing to do during my classes at Law School is read it.

Isaac   July 2nd, 2007 12:50 am ET

A few points:

– I have to scroll two full screens on a large monitor to get to the actual news/sections.

– You might want to rethink your heading of “Popular” when you have headlines in there such as: ‘Man, 19, impregnates girl, 11′ – most viewed, or most emailed perhaps.

– It’s too bland – visually, it’s all the same “weight” with no emphasis.

– A lot of times, I’m interested in a story, but don’t want to watch it as a video but can’t see an alternative.

Hate being a hater, but sorry, not a fan.

Stephen   July 2nd, 2007 1:02 am ET

Change can be good. I like change. In this case, however, it’s a mixed bag. Another comment above made a good point: This is a good draft, but needs work.

First off, it’s very, very bland. Convieniently quick, and the video player is much improved. But the entire feel is very, very, very bland. I feel like I’m reading the news in a hospital. Get more color.

The weather box and the box next to it with podcasts and such need to be moved to the right hand side. I honestly don’t use CNN for weather, and even if I did, that weather box is fairly useless. The RSS, Blogs, and Podcasts are features, not so much news. They need to be on the right hand side with the rest of the features. Move the actual news below it up near the top. I love the catagorized top stories, but they’re way, way down there.

Further, I use a large resolution, and everything gets out of whack a little bit. Perhaps a left justify of everything below the top navigation would make it look better.

eric   July 2nd, 2007 2:14 am ET

the new site is much more spread out, it takes longer for me to get to the information i want now, about twice as much scrolling and more content boxes that i have to learn to ignore. i preferred the old site which was dense with easily scannable information.
if i could customize the homepage (with openID or yahoo ID, dont make me have to register at yet another website) and remove the content boxes i dont want to see, that would make a little things better.

Jim Steele   July 2nd, 2007 3:04 am ET

I LOVE what you’ve done with your site. Thank you.

Jim Steele   July 2nd, 2007 3:06 am ET

Almost forgot–you put your TV channel to shame. What they do is not news. It’s (FOX News & Murdoch competition) entertainment. Thanks again!

marian   July 2nd, 2007 6:13 am ET

I LOVE the new look

Jim Philips   July 2nd, 2007 6:30 am ET

Cleaner design. Much less information than was available on the old home page. Are you reporting that much less?! Or have you just decided to obscure the majority of it? I’ll be visiting less often.

Pat Johnson   July 2nd, 2007 6:32 am ET

Hmmm…maybe some people just don’t like changes. I love you guys, keep up the good work! ;)

R   July 2nd, 2007 6:50 am ET

The “Latest News” links are hard to read. Somehow they blend together too much. Maybe it needs more white space or the font size is too small.

Kimberly   July 2nd, 2007 6:57 am ET

It appears that the “Law” link as well as “Education” has been deleted. I find both of those far more interesting and worthy of my time than the constant barrage of “news” about individuals such as Hilton and O’Donnell.

Erin   July 2nd, 2007 7:24 am ET

The design is nice and simple, but the navigation bar is so plain that it’s hard to see at first. Where’s the science section? Tech is not the same thing. Why has the “Entertainment” section been given such high priority? Entertainment is often not exactly real news.

Also, I used the search function but the only results were links to external sites. What happened to the option to search CNN.com or the Web?

kathy p   July 2nd, 2007 7:49 am ET

too much scrolling is required. And, for those of us not as interested in videos, How would you like to deal with a newspaper that is 4 feet long and 6 inches wide? UGH!

Speed Racer   July 2nd, 2007 7:57 am ET

I don’t like it, my nickel says that in many areas the font is too light and extremely difficult to read, and no, I don’t wear glasses, but maybe I will if I want to read anything. Or, I could switch to Google news, probably will.

Why did they mess with something that worked, there are no new “features” to shout about, only the format has changed, and in my opinion, not for the better, not at all.

Kevin D   July 2nd, 2007 8:34 am ET

The prior version worked fine on my Palm Treo. This version does not seem to work.

David   July 2nd, 2007 9:05 am ET

I think your weather zip code is malfunctioning. I keyed in 22901 (3 times) and each time I was shown the weather for North, SC.

22901 is for Charlottesville, VA

Joe   July 2nd, 2007 9:20 am ET

I don’t know if you can claim the largest flash player or not. I have seen larger but they were not on news sites LOL

John   July 2nd, 2007 9:22 am ET

Your new site is awesome. I like the clean, crisp look and layout of all the pages. Once you start using the site everything just seems to flow better. Great job!

For everyone asking about student news, it’s looks like it falls under the new “Living” section. Law is also now under “US News”. Makes sense to me…

Coda   July 2nd, 2007 9:35 am ET

New site is great. It has a look that matches the CNN News Channel. (Long live the Red & Black!!!).

My videos start more quickly (don’t know why some say they cannot view videos now, mine are better now), the organization of information is great.

(James Earl Jones voice-over):

This is CNN!

Coda.

John   July 2nd, 2007 10:17 am ET

I think this site needed a change and I honestly love the new site.

Kathleen   July 2nd, 2007 10:27 am ET

I really like the new site and especially enjoy the local news section you have added. I do miss the quicklinks on the main page to your program pages, though (Larry King, Lou Dobbs etc). It is a real pain now to get to those pages.

celsius   July 2nd, 2007 10:43 am ET

interesting. initial thoughts: i dig it.

Maggie   July 2nd, 2007 10:52 am ET

I like the look and I had a much easier time browsing through the news this morning. The layout makes it easier to find the different sections, and the nav bar at the top helps as well. Also, I like that there are more stories without video first, and videos are separate.

However, it’s awkward to scroll far down the page to find “More News” (the Science section which I like to read is buried there now). I see Podcasts, Blogs, Local and then More News, and my preference would be to see them in the reverse order–More News, Local, Blogs and Podcasts. Also, not sure site is fully compatible with Firefox.

bpr in seattle   July 2nd, 2007 11:02 am ET

I said it the first time it was introduced and I’ll say it again- Its clean and simple, just how I like webpages to be. Nice job. The only complaint I have is that the visited links are too subtle. I would like it if the color change between active and visited was a little bit more noticable. On a good note, I saw that the Weather section defaulted to some city in CA, I decided I wanted to see what local weather was like. I had a feeling that this was going to be messy. I typed in my zip code, hesitated to hit enter but I did it anyways, and to my amazement the screen didnt refresh, it wasnt a messy ordeal afterall. My local weather poped right up and I continued surfing the news- nice job again!

Timmba69   July 2nd, 2007 11:11 am ET

I, as a web designer, like the new improvements. It is organized better, and the minimalist design doesn’t get in the way of the content. I find the validation error comment nonsensical. This site is not designed to be a css coding bragging rights showcase. I find the look and feel of the new layout, consistent across all the major browsers I test my sites on. Now, I can focus more on the news and content rather than being distracted by disjointed links and that gawdawful red white and blue color scheme.
I agree with one poster, tho — ajax and dhtml will accomplish the same as flash in viewing photos
Keep up the good work!
cheers

David   July 2nd, 2007 11:17 am ET

I like it, but it feels to me like you modeled it off of MSNBC’s website (not a bad thing). Its a lot cleaner than theirs, but their structure appears to have provided your foundation.

Neil Polen   July 2nd, 2007 11:31 am ET

The new website is great! Good design work. Will you guys replicate the look for the TV station? In all honesty, the TV graphics are terrible. Trying to skew the screens and all of these different fonts… makes the “news” difficult to interpret.
Simple and sophisticated is what works.

Juli Mahoney   July 2nd, 2007 11:33 am ET

The new CNN.com looks great! I love the clean, uncluttered, easy to read format. Now if you can just keep the p.r. driven celebrity-of-the-month-bad-behavior-soap-operas out and the real news in– I will be very happy.

Nice work!

Juli Mahoney

Linda   July 2nd, 2007 11:39 am ET

Ok, the live video is great. However, if you have the video on the screen and decide to poke around to see what other videos are available, you have to scroll up and down. Pipeline spoiled me with the ability to have the screen on top, which allows one to poke around for other offerings, while keeping the current video within eyesight. Maybe that’s silly, but I am capaple of doing several things at once.

Now that we are stuck with it, two things would improve the service. First would be the ability to keep the live video pop up screen “always on top”-which I don’t even know is possible. Failing that, second would be the abilty to resize the window. I started out this morning being able to do just that-and now I can’t. What’s up with that?

I hate to say this, but other than the live video offering, the site now looks like everybody else’s. Too congisted and cluttered-and very white.

Sas   July 2nd, 2007 12:03 pm ET

I like the new site, it’s great. I like being able to look at images of other videos at the bottom of the page, while a video is playing, especially during commercials. Congrats CNN!

DinoHorse   July 2nd, 2007 12:13 pm ET

I honestly love the new design, it is very clear, easy to navigate, and clean.. The best part are the video section, finally a Flash player based system to see videos. Also, the tabs are easy to visualize and use… Congrats! A much needed change!

Scott   July 2nd, 2007 12:37 pm ET

do you realize how bad the new site looks on large monitors running at high resolution? Just because you can make the banner stretch to fit does not mean you should.

rob   July 2nd, 2007 1:27 pm ET

love it love love it.

simple and accessible. it will grow on everyone.

Don   July 2nd, 2007 1:57 pm ET

It’s about time you integrated Flash into your site for viewing videos.

Bernie   July 2nd, 2007 3:31 pm ET

The new design is awesome. Crisp, professional, fast-loading. It boasts an intense effort of your developers given the scope and breadth of your site.

One request: Please bring back the ‘Law/Legal’ section! It’s the first area I read daily, even before I switch to ‘Politics’ to see what Pres. Bush has screwed up next…

Harvard   July 6th, 2007 12:48 pm ET

Stop posting stories only as videos. Any report with a video should have a text article as well. Your videos are slow and suck.

A. Kang   July 6th, 2007 2:02 pm ET

As a graphic designer I do appreciate the white space but unfortunately it’s just not appropriate for this new heavy web page. I can’t find your shows easily either. I like the menu bar at the top, it was subtle enough but very functional. And most importantly, I can’t find Anderson Cooper quickly! The section are hard to get to and spot info. I’m not sure the weather needs to hold that realestate….not the best redesign but it’s still my homepage.

You should make CNN more like the Drudge Report. What’s with the option to close the Important News Alert bar? Why would anyone want to close it?

Keep it simple
Keep is updated
Keep it informative
Keep it real

Overall the format is nice and legible. I agree with “Harvard” that too many videos rather than articles are posted, but that’s always been an issue in recent years. I hate Flash and keep it disabled. I do miss the link in Entertainment to the reviews archive. The “All About” doesn’t work well because it pulls articles other than reviews.

Okay, I’m over the shock and awe of ‘change’

I like it now.

I like the redesign.

As a web designer for many years, I have seen news sites go through trends of “clean design”. I must say, that your site is a “sight” for sore eyes. When I am ready to read the news, I want it fast, and I want it to be easy to read, and you have accomplished both swiftly and clearly.

I read your website every morning, and find your reporting to be up-to-the-minute and extrodinarily informative. Having slick Flash and bells and whistles are not always the answer. Cool design is functional design.

We just went through a site redesign of our own, and it is very difficult to create something that gets people the information that they need while keeping a level of good design and SEO. The web has many parameters, but at the same time it has exploded with video and interactivity.

Thanks for making it easier to get the news everyday. I appreciate it.

Obama is the best thing to come along in this country in along time. He’s like the Fil’e in the gumbo. Until now America has been a bowl of soup with very few ingredients. The American people is ready for something different he is bringing this country together like no other person in this country history I’m glad to see it in my life time one Nation with a common cause Demacrocy at it’s best. I just hope the young people take this movement seriuos and stay ingauged in it to make the future of this country better.

To be nominated by a party I guess its the number of delegates that matters. Why would a canditate be declared winner when he/she has less delegates in a state like in New Hampshire where Clinton is declared winner with 11 delegates while Obama has 12 Delegates?

Since the delegates from Florida and Michigan will not be counted at the convention it seems fair to reduce the amount of delegates needed for the party’s nomination. That is, shouldn’ the amount of delegates needed for nomination be one vote over 50% of the total eligible delgates?

I am just wondering, with Obama winning so much of the momentum why all the CNN coverage is about Hillary and Chelsea today?
Hillary’s claim that she is about solutions and Barack is about promises is completely spurious. The best example of this is her previous efforts for universal health care which failed miserably. Now she is the number 2 receiver of funds by the health care lobby. She is completely disingenuous and cares about one thing and one thing only: victory at all costs.
