Obama makes history; And thanks to you, so does CNN.com

Where were you when history was made? Nearly 2 million people crowded onto the National Mall and along the parade route to see the inauguration of our 44th President; but millions of you who weren’t in the nation's capital – or got there and wanted to share the experience online – came to CNN.com. Thanks to you, we made a little history, too.

On Tuesday, CNN.com Live set the record for the largest live video event ever on the Internet when it served a record-breaking 1.3 million concurrent live streams as the new President took his oath and prepared to deliver his inauguration address. Across the whole day, CNN.com Live served nearly 27 million live video streams, breaking our own personal best record of 5.3 million live streams. Incredible!

What made the CNN.com experience extra special was it became a social event—a virtual viewing party for the CNN and Facebook communities. Our special CNN.com Live player enabled users to interact with their friends and other Facebook users as they watched. Thousands of you connected, sharing your opinions and emotions with your personal communities. I personally heard from friends as far away as Hong Kong and India. One messaged: "This was a great way to watch with friends if we could not be in the same room together." Another friend, bummed out about being at work, posted this status update: "This makes me feel like I'm with a crowd, instead of a small office with just a handful of people."

How about you? Did you and your Facebook friends connect on the CNN.com Live player to watch history-in-the-making?

I started watching through Facebook/CNN and it started out ok. It was ok at 10:30, still ok at 11:00, but by 11:15 I started getting bumped off every 10 minutes or so, telling me my session had "timed out". After 4 times of logging in, I must have gotten to the end of the line because I couldn't get back in. So I tried NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and even FOXnews. Nope, everybody was full up. By now it was almost 12 and I was frantic to get to a TV and I drove as fast as I could to get to my parents' house. I had missed from just after the Clintons got there until after Aretha sang but I made it. Whewwwww.

I am teaching in Aqaba Jordan and couldn't get anyone to watch with me whom I wouldn't have to apologize to for being American and enthusiastic. Having registered to vote democratic so i could vote for Jesse Jackson in the primaries in the 80's, I also expected to have a good cry. So i pulled on the CNN stream and threw in about five comments in the hour i watched with facebook strangers. The last inaugural i attended was Reagan's in 1980 (I didn't vote for him but i wanted to be there when the hostages "came home". ) And it felt like that – random interactions with enthusiastic and happy strangers. Several of whom said they were crying. I know i was.

thank you Cnn and Facebook! It was a treat and meant alot to me.

It was a priviledge to share 'the moment' and the emotion of so many Americans on the Mall. The hope and expectation of the people around us were tangible, and the deep significance of this event to generations of Americans was very evident. Awesome.
The President's words were measured but inspiring, especially in the real sense of togetherness ('we are one') that was implicit. He drew the crowd and all America into his ambitions with the repeated use of 'we' – promising a real government of, by and for the people. Observing his success in the presidential election, he has the tenacity, intellect and character to make a reality of this. A change in the balancer of power in the US at last. And at last an intelligent world policy looks possible.

I'll go out on a limb and thank CNN for the exemplary coverage of the event. Despite many people saying that they got timed out and the like, anyone thinking about the sheer bandwidth and server load that was generated for the event will appreciate the resources poured into showing the event. Thank you for giving us all the platform to share our feelings and views with the world as a new milestone was crossed in our collective history.

Wish President Obama the best in trying to make things better.

First of all, I would like to congratulate Mr Obama who become the 44th president of United states. I wasn't able to see it live from USA since I stay at Singapore, far away from there. But I never missed even a single moment that CNN.com provided to us. Thank you CNN.com and Congratulation as well for the record breaking.

Living on the other side of the world made it is hard to comprehend what CNN managed to achieve. Clear chrisp coverage that everyone in any country could enjoy. Truly well done, but more importantly, thank you for a fantastic fair and honest presentation that will last on the web and remaim fresh in our minds for many years to come.

Congratulations and THANKS to the team who came up with your outstanding event! Watching with my colleagues in our conference room while simultaneously participating online, checking in with family, friends and people across the world was invigorating – sharing the outpour of excitement and pride. There are times when social networking is cliche and a poor substitute for reality – but your inaugural event elevated and enhanced my reality. Being a part of the world's biggest party line to celebrate our new President made me feel more patriotic.

I never thought I would be watching / streaning via FB+CNN rather than through television thinking it was just another promotion or something; but for some reason I changed my mind after reading exactly how the streaming was gonna be presented.

A day bfore the inauguration I sent a group mail t oalmost 900 ppl in my FB Obama group
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=23732663792

At 11.30 pm onwards until 4.30 am Sri Lankan time I was glued to it and I really liked the multiple camera streaming option where we could kind of choose which streaming we wanted to watch from time to time.

It was a great job by CNN and FB and I though another cool feature was where you could see what each of the non-friend members watching are updating through their status and you felt like you are part of a global community sitting in one place and watching the inuaguration. It was really a feeling of witnessing history in making

Thank you CNN & Facebook

I watched the CNN live streaming video of the inauguration in Kiev, Ukraine, where my husband is currently teaching in a higher education institution. Coverage was great, with no breaks. For those few hours, I was in America again. Thanks, CNN!

Hellow CNN and Friends,

It has been a wonderful and historical happenings I have nver expected. But It took place. It is unforgateble.

I started watching the whole day from the morning to the last minute after inaugration. I started att CET 11.00 – 02.00 the second day (20/1 – 21/1/2009)

Now we hope that Pres Obama keeps his campaigning promises. We hope he does not help dictator and murdereres in the name of alliance on war against terrorism. Terrorism cannot be fought by supporting dictators. Democracy and the rule of law is the best weapons against terror.

The state Dept must be cleaned from corruption and lobbyists who contribute more hell like they do in Somalia and Ethiopia. State Dept is responsible for the hell in Somalia and Ethiopia.
