CNN launches App for iPhone and iPod Touch

As you may have heard by now, we launched the CNN App for the iPhone and iPod touch last night. We've had this app cooking for a while, so we are extremely excited to unveil it.

Now available for download for a one-time fee of $1.99 on the App Store, the CNN App is designed to provide a visually-driven news experience for iPhone and iPod touch users who demand accessibility and convenience. Simply put, the new CNN App gives you all the news and information you need anytime, anywhere... from the beach to the ballpark!

So what’s in it? Tons of stuff:

  • Read all the latest news most important to you. Easy to navigate by flicking or scrolling through stories and news objects just like album artwork on your iPod. Easy to consume with both snack-size highlights and full stories. Easy to share via Facebook, Twitter and SMS.
  • Watch live breaking news and on-demand video clips across all news categories
  • Save text and video stories to dive into later – and even save text for viewing without a connection (on flights, etc.)
  • Follow topics most important to you, and receive alerts when developments in those areas are published
  • iReport directly from the App! For all you iReporters, the CNN App provides a direct gateway to iReport.com allowing you to browse content or instantly upload your photos and videos (if you have the iPhone 3GS)

Ok, but enough about us. What do YOU think about the App? We've already got a long list of features we're already working on for the next release of the App, but let us know what you'd like to see in future versions – so please post your comments!

UPDATE: Responding to your feedback – questions about charging for App and ad placement

Since our posting this afternoon, we've gotten some great feedback, as well as some insightful questions about the new CNN App. We'd like to take the opportunity to address a few points head-on, all of which are related to how we’re able to make CNN's mobile products even better.

Full disclosure: We’re charging a one-time fee of $1.99 for the CNN App on the iPhone and iPod touch, and the App also has ads in it. We did this for two reasons: 1. To deliver on a premium experience with unique features and functionality never before available from CNN on a mobile device; and 2. to ensure we were positioned to continue building new, improved mobile products to offer consumers.

It is imperative to us that the ads are incorporated in a way that is respectful to our consumers. It includes modestly-sized banner ads with ability to expand – but only if the user initiates it. Further, you can go back to the content quickly, typically with one click and without closing the app.

From the beginning, our goal was to build a groundbreaking app at a reasonable price point. We understand some of you don't want to pay for that experience; but we hope you'll continue to use CNN’s mobile site optimized for the iPhone – which you can access for free. But we also know that many of you already have downloaded the App for $1.99, and really are enjoying it. If you’d like to learn more about all the App has to offer before downloading it, check out www.cnn.com/iphone – it's a good resource.

I know that’s a lot of info, but we thought we owed it to you to explain all this just a bit more. Regardless, thanks for being such fantastic users – your feedback is critical to making all of our platforms and products better!

To those who have a problem with paying the whole $1.99 for the app (after spending 100s on your iPhone/iTouch), you have to pay for internet service in order to access CNN.com, too.

A bit slow on the 1st gen iPhone but very well designed. I cannot attest to video quality (don't even try if you are on Edge) except on WiFi which is very good. I have MSNBC's, AP, USAToday, WSJ, etc. and CNN seems to be more responsive than the others. However, I think the iPhone formatted mobile site seems to be a bit faster to load and navigate.

To those asking for a trial- there are no 'trials' on the app store. They could have a 'lite' version with features stripped away, but that's about it.

The only ads I've seen are very small ones in the list of stories– not obtrusive at all (no pre-roll in video like some apps use). Don't let the ads bog you down, as you may see one per session and it's a very small one.

Worth the $2- sure. Liking the ability to have offline access– something that you don't get with the mobile site.

CNN.com is free to use, MSNBC's app is free to use. I love CNN, but don't see a need to pay $1.99 or any price when I have created a CNN icon on my IPhone that takes me directly to the website for free. Maybe you should start with a 1 or 2 week period where the app is free like many other apps have done. That way us die hard CNNers get it, and then we can convince our friends to get it. I realize that you are trying to add value, but it doesnt work when the same info is available free.

For those of you who are complaining about the $1.99, there could be a "Lite" version down the road which is advertisement driven but is free.

A Lite version usually is a stripped down version of the real thing, and encourages customers to try out the app before purchasing it.

Just my guess, no inside information here.

"We did this for two reasons: 1. To deliver on a premium experience with unique features and functionality never before available from CNN on a mobile device"

That's a reason for displaying ads, yes. That is not a reason for charging $2 for the app. I'm not complaining though, it is your app after all. This just means that fewer people will purchase the app. The revenue model works well with free, ad-reliant apps OR with paid, ad-free apps. The model breaks down when you try to do both.

Great app. I don't mind the ads, but I do wish you wouldn't place them in the text of the articles.

Banners at the top, bottom and sides, sure, but *inside* the articles is just too distracting, especially with the color contrast layout. Please reconsider.

Otherwise, it's a fantastic app. Well-designed, easy to navigate and read. The video looks very sharp. Thanks!

I waited about a year for this app, but you're a little late in the game CNN. I love CNN so I payed for the $2 app, but thats its biggest downfall is the $2. Yes, $2 isn't much and I would probably spend it on worse things, but in the app world, $2 is like buying a $35 steak. Lets go back to marketing 101. Beyond that, I enjoy the app and I hope it stays as good as the TV channel.

Yes, I love this Apps but I found several glitches. My favorite section is of course the iReport. I have address them in my uploads. I did 2 uploads through iReport and both pictures came in the wrong direction and I couldn't edit/preview or view what I just uploaded.

Hardware: iPhone 3G version 3.1 (7c144)

1-image is shifting horizontally
2-There has to be a way to edit the upload
3-There needs to be a way to preview on the apps because going to the web doesn't work since it doesn't support Flash

HELP!! what should I do to upload upright that is my main concern!

After reading various feedback about the app., I think I am going to purchase it. The only thing is you KNOW you have to be the best news app on the iPhone if you are charging for it. There are some other really great ones and they are all free. Just make sure you stay a step ahead other news apps, or you are going to get even more backlash.

I still find it extremely hard to believe you need to charge for the app when there is ads on it. Sure, they might be integrated well, but that really isn't the point.

Although, people do need to realize in the near future they are going to have to start paying for their news even online.

Journalism and PoliSci students, pay attention–this is how to answer a question without actually answering it:

1. To deliver on a premium experience with unique features and functionality never before available from CNN on a mobile device; and 2. to ensure we were positioned to continue building new, improved mobile products to offer consumers.

Why is it so hard to say "These apps are expensive to build and if we don't make money off of it, the project will not continue."

Im not sure I need this app. I already get the CNN news update video podcast as well as the AC360 video podcast for free. And if I am interested in a story I heard about on those podcasts, I come to the website when I get to a computer. Seems silly to pay for something, even only $1.99, when it can all be found for free and on a bigger screen on the internet.

Any plans to offer this app internationally? For a global news organization, I believe that's a given.

And yes, I'll pay for the app at US$1.99, and many will too if the app has premium content (e.g. live video feeds) that CANNOT be found in your free mobile site (CNN Mobile).

One last thing: ads on paid app doesn't make sense. Your argument to include them in the follow-up message is neither persuasive nor does it address the many negative feedback on this issue. If you intend to incorporate ads, then I would suggest you offer the app for FREE and charge a higher CPM for this channel. I really don't see any logic in charging advertisers to place ads that has a restricted audience because it's a paid app.

The app is pretty good – but why does the "Live" feed only become available at certain times? I want to be able to stream live CNN news anytime, anywhere – not just watch certain clips or watch "breaking news" live when someone decides I can.

I would appreciate an update to the app allowing live video of CNN whenever I wish to watch.

I like the app except for one minor gripe. The automatic messages that wake up my phone and pop up on the main screen are annoying. I wish there was a preference to configure the automatic breakng news items, or even give the option to turn them off entirely.

I don't know why i can't see all the videos on Cnn.com if you go through a computer.

there is only a very small number of videos in iphone app comparing to actual videos available online.

very disappointed.
