What's next for video on CNN.com

For the last four years, live video has been a big part of CNN.com. From launching the first live online video service in 2005 with CNN Pipeline, to breaking the all-time record for the largest live video event in Internet history earlier this year, suffice it to say, CNN.com changed the game for live video online.

Along the way, you taught us a lot. We learned that you mostly use live video to stay updated on breaking news events and experience the seminal moments of our time – things like the Pres. Obama's Inauguration, Michael Jackson’s memorial, even this week's Oprah's Book Club Event. But outside of these major events, viewing of anchor-driven, produced, live video programming on CNN.com has been very small, especially in comparison to the millions of on-demand video streams you consume on the site every day. And it's with that in mind that we've made a few changes on the video front.

Starting today, you'll notice that CNN.com Live – while still bringing you the latest live events – has moved away from our anchor-led, programmed format.

Over the years, we understand that some of you have become fans of our online anchors, Melissa Long, Nicole Lapin, Reggie Aqui and Naamua Delaney. We are proud that we had them and our producers alongside us as we blazed the trail for live news video online.

While you can still rely on CNN.com to bring you live video of key moments as they happen, we will begin to focus more resources on producing original, distinctive on-demand video specifically for the Web – something we're very excited about and we think you're going to love.

Bottom line, we're proud to be the pioneers in live video on the web, and in order to maintain relevancy and engage new audiences, we will continue to evolve. The best part is... we're just getting started.

I liked the format before, but don't really like the "shows". I do like the live feeds and breaking news. I hope this will still be available.

that's very disappointing. If that's what CNN is intending, I'd rather read the papers. Very disappointing.

I want my anchors back!!! I always listened to Reggie, Nicole, and Naamua in the background on my computer at work every day. It's not the same without anchors, and I want them back! Please, and thank you!

I am shocked. I didn't know this was happening and when I logged on today I felt lost. I listened to the live anchors everyday at work and it is horrible that you are no longer running this format.

I am so disappointed!!!! Please reconsider this decision. This is how myself and so many others kept in touch with what was going on in the world while tackling our daily schedule. I don't have time to sit and read the paper or online web news. You just cut me off from my #1 information source.

What a shame. I don't understand your decision.

Aw that's too bad, my FAVORITE part of CNN. Plus its more upbeat and not like traditional news. I especially enjoyed Inside Africa, you like NEVER see news reporting on events happening in Africa unless on BBC. Maybe it was because nobody knew about it, A lot of my college people use the internet more than TV, so maybe they just didn't know about. Plus I never would have seen pres OBAMA in St Johns or even MIKE cuz I could look at it at work(!) wow, too bad.

I watched/listened to the anchors everyday. I now have nothing to listen to at work. It is my opinion that this was a very poor decision on CNN's part. I hope that you realize the mistake and bring back the anchors!

I`m very disappointed and I am so saddened by this announcement. That was a very selfish decision. I don´t have time to watch CNN on TV at home because I work hard every day and when I get home I just want to rest and sleep. I liked watching in front of my computer my lovely Naamua who is an excellent journalist in the world. I had my distractions every day and you simply take it from me. Why? I know CNN has the right of making any decision, but facebook fans are extremely upset. Please bring the anchors back!

the previous format is definitely way better. I tuned into CNN.com live because it's interactive. Journalism has to be taken on a more interactive approach, which I thought CNN was doing a great job.

The reason for ceasing anchor-lead format is unjustified and plainly, a poor decision. On top of that, CNN owns the viewers a better reason.

With your new format, CNN, you've lost it.

This is a sad week for CNN.com LIVE. We would have accepted commercials rather than loose our daily news show. now we have to be interactive to get our breaking news. Where do we go from here? we can't get HLN at work... unless you plan on streaming HLN...

I would like to see the news anchors back. I lisited to Reggie and Naamua daily while at work. it was like tv at the job......and it was something appropriate that you can leave on when customers entered the office.

I dont care for the new format, and will be steaming
The View and other shows on the web in the meanitime....

BOOOO to dropping the CNN.com LIVE format that worked so well bringing me both live and produced stories from CNN.

I agree...I want the anchors and format back!!! I always listened to Reggie, Nicole, and Naamua, and others in the background on my computer at work EVERY DAY.

PLEASE bring it back...The anchors provide context and insight as they guide you through they days news stories. Having live streaming video is great but, dare I say BORING without an anchor person to bring it all together.

It's like walking into a restaurant and having the someone point you to the kitchen and say, "Everything you need is in there...help yourself."

I finally found what happened to my trio today...after searching them for a whole day... I second what Cindy said. CNN Live was always there while I was working on my Computer. It was the ideal vehicle for the inevitable merging of future medias including social networking. It showed audacity and understanding of current trends. Now you have on demand videos which is OK but doesn't come near what the trio was doing to generate the 'conversation'. The only thing left is the dying 'cable' only live model which I don't have and never will have. It's like sending a FAX in 2010...I abandoned faxes since the late 90' and anybody that want me to send them a FAX isn't worthy of my business.

Please do something to correct that error in your path...

JF.

Seems like we all agree that it was nice having anchors review the daily news.
I especially liked the noon to 2pm hour with Reggie, Naamua and the daily distraction/British.
If you can't bring them back the perhaps we can see regular cnn programming online (even for a fee)

Reggie, Naamua, Nicole, & Melissa were my work friends–they were what got me through the day. I would pay a fee or watch commercials to have them back. I don't want to listen to NASA or the SENATE all day. I want a well-rounded news cast. I feel inconsolible right now. Will have no interest in cnn.com/live now at all.

It took me a while to figure out what happened. I was waiting for the daily noon newscast (but i catch it here at 9am pacific!) and for a couple days just saw other news and figured that there was something more pressing to be shown than the newscast. It finally dawned on me that I didn't see pictures of my favorite anchors on the cnn.com/live schedule any more and knew something had changed.

CNN, Reggie, Naamua, and Nicole are great anchors and it is a shame that you laid them & the rest of the CNN.com/live production crew. The stories and programs were an excellent source for me to stay connected to what is happening.

Many people have benefitted from the news CNN.com/live provided. Also, the interactive format through Facebook and Twitter made the news more exciting since us viewers can chime in and be heard as part of the conversation.

Bring them back please.

I always used to tell my colleagues how "cutting edge" cnn live was with your live anchors and interactive programs. Many watched. Boy were we disappointed this week when that all came to an end. So much for the cutting edge.

I am extremely disappointed that CNN has given up on its live online broadcast. Why does it feel like CNN pushes viewers away every chance they get. Some people do not have the luxury of watching cable television while at work. It was nice to be able to view the live streaming show from 12-2 to catch up on whats going on.

This is a HUGE disappointment. Melllisa, Naamua, Nicole and Reggie really made my day at work. It really STUNKS at CNN live now. You need to bring them back. Weekdays are not the same anymore. I always got good information that I could pass on in my daily conversations with my sons and friends. you are going backwards with this move. I hope some other Live Internet News group adopts this obvious VOID.

Please bring the anchors back!! There were tons of people like myself who watched and enjoyed them everyday. The CNN news was such a breath of fresh air compared to local news. I don't like the "on demand" format because what I liked was that I could just turn on CNN live and let it play as I got ready for work, made breakfast and relaxed before starting my day. Please bring it back!!

I am really disappointed and can't believe they made this decision. I don't ever sit and go through all of the video they have online and pick and choose what to watch, who has time for that? I watched cnn.com/live every day and couldn't believe it when all I got was space station feed.

Give up back our anchors!

I arrived work everyday at around 9AM. My morning routine begins with logging onto CNN.com Live so I can keep up with the events of the day. Having access to CNN's live feed allows me to concentrate on my work without having to stop and check the news. I really enjoyed the Live anchors as well. Such a shame that CNN feels that the format no longer matches their business model. Perhaps these 4 anchors may be picked up by a competitor and start a CNN.com Live like show elsewhere.

Just admit it. It's all about the money. Too much going out, not enough coming in.

We want the LIVE online broadcasts with anchors. If not that, why not open it up to volunteer anchors in different parts of the country who would do it low cost or for free? Get creative.

Why is it everything has to make a billion dollars, or you folks don't think it's worth doing?

Get creative CNN? Open it up like open source software.

Thanks,

I'm a fan of the old format but am open to a creative, audience participation format too?

By the way, canned videos are just that, and they are old school.

While I liked your anchors, I can understand the reasons for your change. I have not played the live video for a whole day yet but would like to know if you would be bringing news items in addition to streaming in selected locations like the senate etc.?

I think being on the go with my laptop, I still want altleast 15 minutes of cnn news every couple of hours atleast.

Regards

Cheryl

So that's what happened. I'll miss the old format for sure. Next to YouTube, it was my most visited video site. The new format is OK, but it's not really special at all. Having an online anchored news format made CNN distinct, but now it's just like a dozen other news sites that I visit.

It would have been helpful if this information was put up as a note alongside the streaming video. I had to google around to find out what happened to the anchors.
As far as live streaming went, it was really helpful to those viewers who do not own televisions and it was a fast way to get the day's news. I am a college student and i enjoyed those broadcasts. Now that it is history, i am switching to another news network that will give me the same.
Between the "cnn challenge" and the live stream, i would have gotten rid of the game. Audiences aren't very loyal if they do not get what they want. I for one am done with cnn.
